anti-rust stickers for hooks

does anyone here use those anti-rust stickers on their hooks? I'm curious as to whether they work or not.

I have been using the 'Sacrificial Anodes' for years on all modern chemically sharpened hooks used for trolling, popping and jigging.
The only time frame I can use in how the Anodes extend the life of hooks like the Gamakatsu SL12S, Jobu, O'Shaughnessy and Livebait is, when trolling the hooks would need checking a couple of times a day for bluntness, but with a bit of Anode the hooks get washed and put away for another day and last months, even years, just check on the deterioration of the anode tape.
Each strip can be cut into three or four strips [depending on hook size] and wound around the hook shaft, big time and money saver ;D.

I understand you have to scrape off the finish before attaching it - like the black finish on a Jobu or the gold finish on a SJ-41?

Correct Brandon,

The black finish should be cleared off first to ensure good contact. Duncan at Fish head kindly offered me some of these a while back and I experimented with them. These particular ones were little squares about 1cm square - I placed 1 on each ST 66 treble of 2 poppers and a small dab of super glue to ensure they stayed on after a million casts as Duncan recommends, I left the other 2 poppers as is. I noticed after 3 days use that around the point were I remove the barb that surface rust had formed on the ones that didn?t have the anodes; even after rinsing them with fresh water after each use. The poppers with the anodes were fine ? after a months use the hooks without the anodes needed the surface rust sanded away especially around the shank and still the ones with the anodes were fine. I particularly like them on the smaller poppers, as these finer wire hooks obviously will rust out quicker and thus they do last longer, meaning less maintenance and more fishing time ? that has to be a good thing??.

Any companies other than Owner that make these anodes?  Particularly a Japanese company, but any will do.

I did an internet search for Owner rust stop tape and got nothing... :)

Hi David
Hal at Bluewater sells the owner rustop anode strips.

Not sure if you prefer a store closer to where you are based.

Zac, David is a long way away. His postage will cost him more than the goods!

Sorry David didn't realize that you are based in Japan. Yeah have to agree Brandon it wouldn't be a real cost effective option

You can buy the anode paint which is made by Fisherman. Being Fisherman, it should be readily available in Japan (PS David, please go recruit Suzuki San to this forum ;))

Alternatively, Neil from Jones's Tackle is the only retailer of this paint in Australia. Please support those who support us ;D

Hi Guys,

When I did more fishing with bait, there was a point when I struggled to choose between stainless steel hooks & non-ss hooks. Well, the reason for the dilemma is pretty obvious I guess.

If I were to use ss hooks, i could re-use the hooks over several trips, but I could scarcely do the same for the non-ss ones. However, if I were to hook-up to a fish & the line broke, then the ss hook might take a much longer time to corrode & fall off the fish - which is not a cool idea for folks with even just some conservation in mind.

I decided to choose non-ss hooks instead, as the hooks i used were not really that expensive - so not being able to re-use them but yet being able to do a minute part for conservation was the go for me.

But now! Quality GT trebles & jigging hooks, to me, are not really that cheap. The idea of being able to re-use them is surely tempting! However, the dilemma from my teen-days are manifested in another way now..

What if the line breaks & my popper & anode-taped hooks are firmly lodged in the fish's mouth? How long will it take before it falls off? - before the fish can feed effectively again?

Cheers!

Hi Lance ,

Use barbless treble hook , a few headshakes by the fish will dislodge it and if you are lucky , the popper will float n you can retrieve the lure .

Hey Jon,

I suspected the topic of barbless hooks would be brought up, & so I hope u know I  understand your take (if not, I would not have expected it).

I agree with you that in many cases, barbless hooks do dislodge quite easily. However, there are cicumstances when the fish could be hooked in such ways that even barbless hooks would be hard to dislodge with just a few headshakes.

Alright, supposing that these situations are rare, then we'll also have to consider that some anglers do prefer to fish with barbed hooks for varied reasons - It could be because they want to minimize on hooks getting pulled halfway into the fight.

Salam..

Asking for 'anode fishing hook paint' in Japanese is going to be one of my more difficult translation tasks...  :)

Luke, is Suzuki-san from Fisherman?  Do you know if he speaks English?  Fisherman is located on Ishigaki, another faraway island in Okinawa (hey, at least we're in the same prefecture!) that I could possibly visit someday in the off-season.

You might be better just ordering straight from this website if you can't visit Fisherman directly anytime soon: http://www.plat.co.jp/shop/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=2345

Yes, Fumio Suzuki is from Fisherman - and yes, speaks select English. Maybe if you purchase a few thousand dollar of rods i'm sure he'll speak as much english as you want ;D (hmmmm, that only works out to 3 rods... :o :o)

Where abouts do you live there David?
