Well were to start! It has been a long few months during summer waiting for the Khareef (monsoon) to stop blowing in Southern Oman so we can start the season. We ended off the season on a big high with 2 absolute monster GTs of 152cm and 151 cm so we have been polishing the hooks and wondering what we would find after the 5 months summer period were no one can fish the waters around Hallaniyat Islands. But the team has been busy getting our Lodge on Hallaniyat Islands ready for the season along with fitting out 2 x 37ft Center consoles with new canopies, rod holders, servicing engines etc. Finally the weather started breaking towards the end of September and we had high hopes that we could start the season early but this was a teaser and the weather turned sour again and we had to unfortunately cancel our first trip of the season but luckily we had an opening on one of the boats in Northern Oman and the guys fished the Musandam and will be back later this season. But finally the real deal came and the weather started to calm down a bit and we could finally start the season and WOW what a start!! Absolute carnage!

The lodge from across our marina with a fresh paint job. The villa is about 30m from the water.

We now have the first shop, restaurant, laundry and barber on the island next to the lodge

View from the gate

View of the stairs leading to the upper deck

Upstairs terrace where we have meals and relax for lunch and in the evening.

One of the 37ft Center Consoles with new canopy and rod holders.

The team consisted of Wayne De Jager a good friend and ex owner of East Coast Charters in UAE, Trevor Skinner a good friend and client from Dubai that fishes with us often in Musandam and Alex Jordan from the UK who I have been speaking to over the forums, emails and phone for most probably the last 3 years, so it was great t finally meet Alex and get him on one of our trips and lastly but not least Capt Damon who is one of our Captains from the Musandam who will be skippering and guiding in Southern Oman this season.

I met up with Trevor and Alex at our shop in Dubai where Alex picked up his new Carpenter Monster Hunter and a few other bits and pieces. We put the final logistics together and we were all going to meet at the shop at 04.30am the following morning and travel down in convoy. It is one of my favourite things driving through the desert and wide open spaces! The following morning we all met up a little late because of myself and Capt Damon. But after a quick coffee we were on the road and heading for the start of the season. We had a great drive through the desert and stopped along the way for fuel and to stretch our legs along with admiring our surroundings!

Alex and Trev at one of the petrol stops.

Nothing but wide open spaces

We finally after a 10 hour drive came over the escapement and Shuwaymiyah and the blue sea lay in front of us. The sea looked flat and the excitement levels went through the roof. Although it is always a bit misleading as normally the weather and wind start about 8-10 miles offshore were the wind comes around the Hasik Point, but looked a lot better than expected. We arrived in the Marina and Capt Mohammed was waiting for us with one of the boats. I have never seen 3 grown men unpack a car and truck quite so quickly!! But we loaded the gear onto the boat and set of for a 5 day adventure out on the Hallaniyat islands that none of us will forget in a hurry!!

Damon and Wayno setting up in the tackle room.

After a restless sleep waiting for the alarm to go off all the guys were up and ready for the start of what was to be an amazing trip. A quick breakie and we headed out as the sun was coming up. We headed for one of the close reefs and were fishing within about 10 minutes. On one of the first casts Alex had a big GT swirl behind his lure but not commit, by this time everyone was shaking with GT fever and the trip had truly started. Wayne then put a long cast out with a Hammerhead Popper and a huge GT climbed out of the water all over the popper and headed straight for the shallow water and after a very short fight reefed him!! "Welcome to Hallaniyat Islands Mr Wayne we hope you enjoy your stay!!" This all happening in the first few minutes! After a few more casts we started getting a lot of smaller blacktip and yellowdot trevally come up and the guys started hooking up and having plenty of chases. Then Wayne hooked up to a decent fish that gave him a bit of trouble and out came a nice AJ on a Halco Rooster Popper!! Great start to the trip all the guys putting fish in the boat in the first hour. Something great to build on!

Team picture at the start before everyone took a beating from the Hallaniyat Monsters. Still looked fresh!

After catching a lot of smaller trevally we decided it was time to carry on the search for the first GT of the season. We headed for the next point and arrived to see nice current, white water and a lot of fusiliers. Perfect conditions. The guys started putting in a few casting and then Wayne put in a cast next to the shallow rock and popped his popper twice and the sea erupted as a black monster came out and smashed his popper! The Race Point 200 almost got ripped out of his hands and after setting the hook the fish took off luckily along the reef and not over it! The fish must have taken close to 100m of line on the first run! We maneuvered the boat out of the shallows and the fight was on trying to keep up the fishes head!! Wayne started working the fish towards the boat but the fish was not coming easy plus giving Wayne a few arm wrenching head shakes! After a good 15 minutes Wayne was in total pain and kept putting on the pressure and finally we got a huge number plate and could see that this was a true monster GT!! Wayne worked the fish up to the surface and Damon and Mohammed landed the fish! The first of the season and an absolute monster of 143cm!!! Everyone in the boat went crazy, no one could quite believe that the first GT of the trip and season was a massive fish well over 50kgs! After a few pictures and many high fives this beauty was put back in the water to terrorise someone else another day! Wayne had his first monster GT after trying for many years with me in Musandam, Seychelles and Maldives so it was an emotional fish for Wayne and why you come to Southern Oman!! Simply put priceless!

The fish putting the hurt on Wayne with Damon looking on.

Feeling the deep burn!! Bending on the RP 200!

Absolute Monster 143cm GT to start the season!

Amazing fish!

After all the excitement of the morning we tried a few more spots but nothing much was happening so we headed back towards the lodge for lunch and to try a few spots close to the marina. We stopped off at one of our points about 2kms from the lodge to give a few casts and Trev on the first drift cast into a shoal of fusiliers and had a big fish come from under his OA Cubera Popper and smash it and head straight back down to the reef. Trevor managed to stop the fish and we slowly pulled the fish out of the shallows and Trev was in for an epic battle. After a great battle Trev got his first big GT to the side of the boat and we landed a great 127cm GT. A great fish and hard fought battle and Trev had his fish he had been looking for the last season in Musamdam and Southern Oman! A few pictures and she was released.

Trev in action on the Monster Hunter 80H

Trev very happy with his first big GT with Damon

Trev vowed not to do the thumbs up thing, but on the first day we already had 2 thumbs up!!

The next drift Alex put out a good cast and on the same spot had a good fish come up and smoke his popper. Alex had been waiting a long time for this GT and we have discussed this for the last few years so it was great to see him hook up and in action. Alex put on the pressure and has a great fighting technique with a wide stance and got the fish to the boat in style on his Race Point 250 custom that he built himself! We landed the fish and Alex had his biggest GT. A few pictures and the fish was released! On the next drift it was Waynes turn again and he hooked into a decent fish that gave him a good tussle. We landed the fish got a few pictures and released. A really great mornings fishing. All the guys had caught their best GTs ever and all before lunch on the first day! We headed back to the lodge for lunch, a shower and a quick cat nap before the afternoon session!

Great fish and caught 2kms from the lodge.

Wayno with number 2 for the morning.

Love this picture shows the emotion!!

We headed back to the lodge for a relaxed lunch on the terrace followed by a shower and short afternoon sleep. Really great to have the island lodge up and running properly and been able to fish early morning and late afternoon with a break during the day. We caught most of our fish at sunrise and sunset when the fish start to move into the shallows to feed. We also used the morning and afternoon session to change gear and tactics to give ourselves the best chance at fish from seeing the conditions and changing tactics.

Having lunch on the terrace overlooking the sea. Kareem Ashrafs son is now helping us on the island and showing his Arabian Hospitality!

Wayne having an afternoon sleep before and evening session.

Trev back on the boat for round 2!

For the afternoon session we decided that we had a good morning with the GTs so we would try some jigging on one of the points off the deep side of the island. We headed out to the marks and on the first drop Trev went tight on the way down! After a great battle Trev got his first AJ jigging! For the rest of the afternoon we caught a good few AJs with Alex catching some nice fish on his own custom built Synit. Everyone got their first AJs of the trip which was great and we headed back to the marina at sunset after a fantastic first day!! I think the voltaren tablets were already been used on day 1!!

Capt Damon getting used to skippering in Southern Oman, did a fantastic job and put us on the fish with Mohammed.

Wow - I am sitting here back in the miserable UK weather still in a dream like trance ... quite simply the best fishing trip I have ever been on with memories that will last my lifetime!

Thanks to;
Trevor for hosting me overnight and driving down putting up with my near constant pommie nattering and snoring in the car on the way back up
Wayno for showing the way and constantly putting the hurt on the fish and his bail arm!
Nick for being a fantastic host overall with his endless enthusiasm and encouragement throughout the trip
Damon and Mohammad for being great crew and helping us through each day
to Asharaf and his son for catering tirelessly and always with a smile!

I am going to take some time going through the 3K+ photos Nick has graciously let me have plus Wayno's pics to add so I will do a thourough trip report from the client angle but if there were any doubts about making the long haul to Southern Oman - its worth it as its a special place indeed!

Many thanks guys! Was a good trip and I'll post the rest of the trip now.

Hi Sami! Alex used the RP250 custom that he made and worked very well and caught some awesome fish. Then Wayne was using the RP 200 standard and caught the big 143cm fish on it! He was using a Stella 10000 and PE6 so very good fishing and the rod I think gave him the extra power to stop him getting reefed and lifting its head!! See you tomorrow!!

Hi Dave! Had to keep a close eye on Alex....... it was good fun with Alex on the trip. Give us a shout about dec for Musandam will sort something out!

Hi Trevor! Was an awesome trip and three thumbs up on paper works for me!!

Cheers,

Day 2

The first night we had an awesome dinner with lots of banter about fish caught and lost. A few game plans were discussed for the next few days now that the guys had an idea of what to expect. Our aim was to try and catch a good few species but also to explore some different areas and enjoy what Hallaniyat has to offer. After dinner everyone was well tired and most of the tackle was already set up so it was early to bed. This night we all slept like logs as the body was tired but the mind content with some good fish already.

Early next morning everyone was up before sunrise and Damon had the boat packed with all the gear, a quick breakfast and we headed out for the second day. We fished a few places and then on about the third point we fished Trevor had a good swirl and follow then the fish hit again and came tight off the stern of the boat, at the same time Wayne had a hit on the bow. Both fish seemed to fight a bit different and not as aggressive, we worked the fish towards the boat and up came 2 AJs both on poppers, awesome catch and in about 4m of water! A few pictures and then fish were released.

Double Aj on top water

I was keen to try and get a AJ on top water with a Carpenter Gamma, thought it would be good practice for New Zealand!! I chose the white Gamma 160 that I received as a gift in Tokara from Ajiti-san. On the next drift I was working a point with a bit of current and some fusiliers hanging of the point when a huge hit came and I went tight! I hit the fish and had some good power from the Monster Hunter and got the fish under control. But the fish started to put a bit of hurting on me and I was thinking this was a monster AJ. I worked the fish towards the boat and out of the greeny blue water the all to familiar shape of a GT appeared. A really nice fish and very happy it was a good GT on the white Gamma! Many thanks Ajiti-san!! A few pictures and the fish was released!

Oooh that is goood!

Happy!

Alex putting the fish back, check out the size of the propeller!

Heading back for lunch and getting an escort from some dolphins!

Mohammed at the wheel showing us his local knowledge!

On the first drift Wayne on his trusty Halco Rooster put out a good cast and a GT hit him about 2m from the boat but the scary part was there was a monster pitch black fish with the hooked fish that came flying at the boat like a topedo that looked like it was going to bit the boat. Trevor was sitting on the side of the boat watching the action right where the black topedo was heading, he actually got a fright on got off the gunnel, I was at the wheel and also took a few side steps away from the fish! Totally amazing and must have missed the boat by cms!! After a lot of laughing and shaking of our heads this beast was named Black Moby and will definitely live on in our stories for many years! One of my best moments of the trip! But with this all happening Wayne was still tight on a fish and by this stage Wayne had landed a good few fish and fought the fish like a pro and had it to the boat on the RP 200 in a couple of minutes! Another nice Hallaniyat GT.

Wayno bending!

Is this guy happy or what!!

Alex had bought a Carpenter Livebait lure similar to a Gamma and he was trying it out on the Monster Hunter, after a few pointers on working the lure and the slow pull and sweep action, Alex had the gist of what to do and was working the lure well. On about the third drift Alex had the lure flashing in the water like a disco ball and definitely got the attention of a GT that came in a smashed the lure!! Game on!! Alex hit the fish and worked the fish to the boat again in a short time to land a very well caught fish from working the lure to fighting style! Another great morning session came to an end and we headed back to the lodge for lunch and a rest and new change of clothes.

Bending with the fish in the background

Team picture!

For the afternoon session we decided to hit one of two GT spots and then head out to jig for some AJs. Wayne was in excellent form and on the first drift after lunch hooked into a good fish that put the hurt on him big time! I think this fish made up for the previous fish and gave Wayne a good go for his money, Wayne finally worked the fish to the boat and we landed the fish, when we were taking out the hook I noticed that the fish was hooked on one hook and the 250lbs split rings was almost opened totally! Amazing that we managed to get the fish just in time!! A few pictures and the fish was released! We tried a few more spots with not to much success and headed out to jig for AJs.

We arrived on the marks and straight away we got into good AJs. Everyone caught a few fish and I hooked into a monster that reefed me on my light jigging MC Works 546JS, but on the next drop I managed to hook a good fish and keep it off the bottom and landed a very nice sized AJ on light gear. Then Trevor ended the day at sunset with a nice AJ on his Hots 56XH. Another excellent day came to an end in Southern Oman.

Day 3

Early the next morning we were out as the light was breaking over the horizon and headed for the first GT spot about 1km from the lodge. It was full moon so the first couple of drifts were done fishing by moon light which was pretty cool but unfortunately we had no hits early before sunrise. We fished a few areas and decided to head for one of the far spots to jig for the big AJs as the weather was going to start to turn and get a bit worse. On the way we stopped by where the local fisherman have been catching a lot of fish chumming livebait and managed to catch a few tuna and bonitos on light gear really good fun. There were millions of birds and action. Wayne hooked into a longtail tuna and the fish took off like a rocket and peeled off a lot of line for a small fish only to go limp, Wayne pulled the fish into the boat and found that he had been taxed! So not only fisherman around catching fish!!

But on the next drift we got onto the spot and Alex went tight again with a good sized fish that he managed to get to the boat and get a bit of sweet revenge! A few pictures and the fish was released. The following drift it was my turn again and I managed to get a nice fish at sunset to the boat. Great fight and put the rod to the test! Then on the last drift of the day after the sun had set it was Damons turn to try to catch his first Southern Oman GT. On about his third cast he hooked the fish right at the end of his cast and the game was on. Damon had borrowed my rod and the drag was set very high to try and stop the previous fish getting to shallow water so he had quite a tought time with the fish but put his back to the test and worked the fish to the boat to land his first Southern Oman GT of 124cm. A great end to a excellent day, we headed back to the lodge arriving as it was getting dark. By now all the bodies were very tired and all concept of time and work had disappeared and the guys were just plan and simply having fun!!

Alexs GT came in the end.

Day 4

Getting out of bed early in the mornings was getting harder as each morning went by and the body became stiffer and stiffer! But after a good breakfast with some fresh RAW coffee from our kiwi coffee roasting friends in Dubai everyone was ready for the coming day! We headed out at sunrise and tried a couple of spots with not to much success and then Alex hooked into a nice bluefin trevally which was his first. A really nice dark fish! Wayne on the next drift got some of his mojo back and hooked into a nice GT that put him to the test on the RP 200 and gave him a bit of hell! But Wayne by now was a pro and got the fish to the boat and landed another nice GT. I had been burning to catch a AJ on top water and finally my chance came! I had cast out with a OA Cubera 180gr popper into the deeper water where I saw a shoal of fusiliers swimming a few pops and a big swirl on the popper with a big ol AJ tail coming out of the water as the fish did an indo over the popper!! A few quick strikes and the fish was on! Very happy with hooking up I took my time and enjoyed the fight. They actually put up an amazing fight for their size on the popping gear! I got the fish to the boat and got a few pictures and released her to swim back to the deep and grow to 50kg! Alex was up next on his light spinning gear and hooked a AJ on a small stickbait! Really awesome fight and put all the tackle to the test! Alex worked the fish back to the boat and landed a nice AJ on the light gear. The AJ on top water was hotting up big time!!

We had lunch and took a bit longer to get back out on the water to fish the sunset session as the fishing had been a bit slow and we were keen for a bit of a rest and relax. We headed out around 15.00pm and fished a few spots and then headed for our sunset spot! On the first drift I had a big fish come up behind my popper and miss but the rest of the shoal came up and Wayne went tight and then Trevor fishing his Hots 70MH with PE4 went tight on a RAL pink 80gr Stickbait. The two guys got up to the bow and we slowly tried to work both fish off the reef. But a bit difficult to work a big fish with PE4!! But Trevor held the fish well while we landed Waynes fish first and got a few pictures. We then turned our attention to Trevs fish and he slowly managed to get get line back and then the fish got directly under the boat and would not move! An agonizing few minutes as Trevor tried to lift the fish and would gain a bit of line and then loose the line again, but finally the fish rolled out from under the boat and Trevor got a beautiful 124cm GT to the boat on light tackle!! An amazing catch followed by a lot of high fives!! A few pictures and the fish was put back. The fish fever was running high on the boat and Trevor was saying that his Hots 70MH which was his sailfish rod had now become his GT rod! A lot of laughs as we reset for the next drift.

Double trouble! Wayne and Trev hooked up

Wayno with a good sized GT

Trev bending on the Hots 70MH, fought the fish like a seasoned pro.

Amazing catch 124cm GT on PE 4 and Hots 70MH!!

As the sun was going down I put in a long cast and on the second pop had a sailfish almost come totally out of the water and smash the popper like a GT, the fish missed and I popped the lure to the boat and had the sailfish chasing the popper and hooked another sail but came off. Trevor at the stern of the boat had put out a cast behind my popper and a sailfish climbed onto the stickbait and he hooked the fish up and game on!! Some spectacular jumps and lighting fast runs! The fish stayed on and we worked the fish to the boat and Damon leadered the fish and grabbed the bill to land a great sailfish again on the Hots 70MH and RAL 80gr stick! A lot more high fives and laughs. I had to ask Trevor now to make up his mind if this rod was his GT rod or sailfish rod?? Great end to another great day!

Day 5

Finally all good things come to an end and the last day had arrived! But already we had had an excellent trip and all the guys had achieved their goals and so the last day was going to be relaxed and easy. The weather had come up quite a bit and the wind was pumping so we decided to fish some of the protected spots and not bash around trying to get out to far points. Early morning we did a few drifts over some shallow reefs that drop off to about 30m and I decided to try the jig on my light gear as the guys were popping the drop off and hooked up to a good sized yellowdot trevally, then on the next drop I was about half way up from the bottom and I had a big hit! I set the hook and the fish started to peel off line! I could feel it was a big heavy fish, I stopped the fish and turned the fish and started to gain line, I could feel this was some type of reef fish and then I say this massive red fish come up to the surface, it was a massive Blood Snapper. Amazing fish and very happy with this on the light jigging gear with a 200gr Shout Shab Shab jig!

Early morning on the boat heading for the first spot.

Monster Blood Snapper. Awesome fish ended the trip off very nicely for me!!

We moved off to the next spot and Alex had been trying hard for the last day to hook up on a GT and his wish came true. A big fish came up and hit his popper and started to strip off line at a bit of an alarming rate. But Alex got the fish under control and we moved into deeper water, but this was a proper disgruntled fish and put the hurt on Alex! Alex put his Monster Hunter to the test big time! The fish sat under the boat and kept trying to get into the engines, but Alex handled the fish very well and everytime managed to get the fish away from the engines and the boat, finally Alex worked the fish to the boat and landed another great Southern Oman GT!! A good few pics and the fish was released.

Finally the last session of the final day came after another good lunch and we headed out of the marina for the last session. We found some good fish but did not manage to hook up to many fish with some broken lines. Finally Wayne hooked into a big black GT that almost digested the popper it was so far down its throat. Even with hooks with the barbs squashed we battled to get the hooks out eventually using bolt cutters to cut out the hooks and we released the fish without pictures but Wayne would get his revenge and caught one of the smaller fish of the trip to end off an amazing 5 days fishing with a great bunch of guys in a great location! We are already planning their next trip for 2013!

Waynes GT hitting his popper

Wayno bending on the RP200 for the final time!

Group picture of one of the smaller fish of the trip but a good time had by all!

This was a great start to our season and we are a long way ahead of where we were this time last year with boats, lodges, staff, equipment etc, so this is looking like it is going to be one hell of a season! We managed to catch 19 GTs with the biggest 143cm, 7 AJ on topwater, 1 sailfish on top water, then many blacktips, yellowdots, bigeye, bluefin and brassy trevally. Our second boat Seahawk 2 was also out with clients and they managed to catch 15 GTs with the biggest 142cm, so a total of 34 GT in the first week! A really great start and I hope many more reports to come!!

Nick,

Great to read the report and look at the pictures. Brings some great memories back. However, what will always stick in my mind is the monumental, inevitable smokings as well the bent rods, screaming reels and burning gloves.

Many thanks to you, Damon and Mohammed for making the trip an easy one for us fisherman. Your team and organization is consummately professional.

Many thanks as well to my fishing buddies for the great company and continuous banter that made light work of even the most intense, adrenaline filled moments.

Lastly, a personal thanks to you for the time taken to mentor an enthusiastic but inexperienced fisherman. I learnt more in 5 days than I have in 50 years!

Have a great trip with tight lines and big fish and catch up when you get back.

Regards,

Trevor
