May 12, 2013, 09:51:27 AM
Hey guys just looking to get some opinions on the new daiwa catalina 6500h as a popping reel compared to a Stella or saltiga.. Is it a cheaper alturnatve or is it false economising??? Won't get frequently used so I was just trying to save a bit of coin

I have seen Catalina 6500H prices that are almost the same as a 2008 Stella 18000. On that basis, you would surely have to buy a Stella?

Perhaps but you can also find them a lot cheaper when the come on sale at around $699 so are they worth that or spend the extra on the top of the range

I have not used the reel but it rates well by Alan hawk in his review. I would look for some on water tests from this forum first however.

Craig,

Perhaps a good start would be a description of what species you would like to catch with the reel (and the rod for that matter) and where you intend to fish it.

Be aware that you're in a GT forum and the fish places very specific demands on tackle.

In my experience, GT fishing and 'economical' rod and reel choices don't go together.

Trevor

Thanks Trevor am looking a chasing GTs off pt lookout in Brisbane Queensland mainly to around 20-25kg perhaps a few bigger if I am very lucky...  Wouldn't class it at and economical reel but definitely not top shelf like Stella.. Mainly asking if there is a noticeable difference between it and the saltiga in performance and durability.

Trevor definitely finding out pretty quickly that there is nothing  economical about chasing GT's perhaps that is also part of the attraction with these fish!!!!!

Craig,

I have no experience with the Catalina, as such, so will not comment on the reel specifically or the rods that you have in mind. It may be perfectly adequate, it may not.

However, I have fished with guys that have tried to catch decent sized GTs with equipment that they thought would do the job, chosen mainly on price. It almost always ends badly.

I'm not saying that the only option is to own a whole wardrobe of Stellas and Carpenters but there is a required minimum standard and that costs a certain amount of  money. In my opinion, there is less flexibility in the choice of reels than rods. I've seen good fish caught on averagely priced rods (Brandon gives some excellent alternatives in his Guide to Buying a GT Rod, which you must have read by now) but I don't think I've ever seen a good fish landed on a averagely priced reel.

The attraction of these fish is the sheer aggression when they hit a surface lure and their ability to continue that degree of intensity until they're alongside the boat. Having the right equipment to successfully achieve that without endangering the fish or the fisherman is the goal. Once you've hooked one you'll understand...it's addictive.

Hope this helps a bit.

Regards,

Trevor

Yeah thanks mate.. It was actually the review by Alan Hawk that kind of made me question if I need a saltiga or not as he was basically suggesting they are now almost the same reel to a certain degree. But I certainly take you point that if you want to fish for them you need to invest in the right equipment without compromise...

Hi Craig,

I have recently purchased both the 6500H & the 5000H Catalina's for the very reason of them being engineered exactly the same as a Saltiga in every way except a few less "non-essential" bearings, handle knob & cosmetics, which is a very bold move by Daiwa to do this as if you can pull yourself away from the stigma of them not being a "Saltiga", you will have a reel that will do exactly the same job at a better price which then allows you the coin to add a spare RCS6500 or RCS7000 spool.

I must admit the deciding factor also for me was I picked them both up for very good price here in Sydney that made it more the reason to grab them.

Find one at a very good price and grab it, you won't be disappointed.

Cheers,

Ian

Oh my god......finally you put your head up Mr IanC  :o

I'm sure these reels will do the job for fish up to 15-20kg or thereabouts.
