NIKON 1 AW1
September 20, 2013, 12:39:07 AM
Hi all,

4 months ago I bought the Nikon AW 110... but, now the launch of NIKON 1 AW1, although I’m not a “photo specialist”, in my humble point of view, this camera may/could be what I was looking for a “rugged” camera for better fishing pictures…

Please, if you have more “photo experience”, tell me what its sounds to you…

Hi Marco,
I can not comment on the Nikon mirror less camera you are referring to. It would seem the dpreview link provided is in depth with relevant following comments.

Personally the Canon 'G'  series of camera I find excellent for a compact camera that will take quality photos.
I have the G1X couple with a waterproof housing.
Although the G1X and housing is not as smaller unit as the Nikon you are looking at.

Best regards,

Hi Marcio

It looks like a great unit. I've used a mates Nikon 1 (the regular model not the new AW) and it handles really well and takes great pictures. The waterproofing should make it perfect for fishing photography. I like the look of the rubber armour that you can get as an accessory, should be good for fumbling around on a boat with wet slimy hands.
The only thing that concerns me is that it could be near on impossible to change lens in the field without getting salt into the sensor. Not that there is much of a selection in WP lenses yet. I would be inclined to put the zoom lens on and leave it there.
The only thing I would like more is shooting in raw (for editing later) but I don't think any other WP compacts offer that either. Also a wider angle lens would be great, which again I don't think any other WP compacts offer either. At least having interchangeable lenses means that a true wide angle may be a possibility in future if the AW concept proves popular.
If you want a camera with more 'pro' features however, you're best off looking at the Canon G1X or G15/G16 in a WP housing, like James mentioned.
Cheers
Duncan

Thanks very much Duncan and James...

Yes, I agree... the really expected feature (in lens) is a true waterproof wide angle... but, this launching opens a whole new world for a better IQ in a "small package"... lets wait for new releases at the future...

Best,
