Re: Introductions :: Who Are You?

Hi folks,

I found this site whilst doing some research for a trip to West Africa (no GTs but plenty of Jack Crevalle and Leerfish, so I get to learn popping on some "easy" fish  ;D). I'm hoping to fish for GTs next year, probably the Andamans.

I'm UK based but used to live in Africa and head back there to fish whenever possible.

I hope I can pick up some good advice on buying the right gear for some serious GT fishing.

Cheers

Dave

Hi All

My name is Matt

Just getting into jigging/popping and any sort of lure fishing in between. It drives some of my more traditional fishing mates crazy that I dont use bait but I reckon it makes fishing more exciting!!!!

I have always found specific topic forums useful for info so it was only natural to start looking for info and come across this forum :).

Cheers

Hi to All,

my name is Anthony  and I am really looking forward to learning what I can from all the combined experience out there. Zimbabwean by birth currently based in Surabaya in Indonesia. New to this popping scene but been fishing hard since birth. Grew up on fresh water , mostly tiger fish in the Zambezi .From 1990 - 2004 made 9 trips into Mongolia after Taimen and Lenok fly fishing and fished some of the very remote rivers /  areas getting in by helicopter with a local friend associate.

Well and truly hooked on popping, especially for giant GT's the likes of which I was lucky to meet a few last week in Sumba - aiyeeeeeee  - the line breaks are still keeping me awake at night . I have been invited  to fish with some guru's in Indonesia over the last 2 years who have been patient and have taught me volumes about popping and everything related to it - Acun, John, Joko - thanks guys and john I have pencilled in the YFT for PR late June.

I will try and post a report on a trip made last week to Sumba when I get the photos in hand. Huge GT's and lots of them.

Hi Anthony ,

I am glad you finally made it here , you will find several friends of yours from Africa are already members of this forum . You may find interesting that a couple of guys residing in JKT are Mongolian alumnies too although from different industries .

On Pelabuhan ratu , I will call you the moment I receive report from my captain down there , right now the water is murky due to heavy rainfall in the mountain although some commercial fishermen still catch big YFTs by using livebait , so they are deep down instead of on the surface as we like them .

Jon .

Hi folks,
Sure is nice to be a part of an ever widening GT fan populace.
I live in India,in Kerala and in a place called Cochin. We do have small GT here, nowhere near the sizes you guys fish regularly. But this initiation has only made me so much more curious about this super sport and Iam trying to document various places in the vast Indian coastline where GT reside.I have no doubts that big GT would be thriving in Indian waters.
Iam sure there would be some nice posts on GT popping in the Andamans as well as Lakshadweep.
Look forward to a nice exchange with all you super keen anglers.
cheers
Praveen

G'day,

My name is Clay Hilbert. Currently reside in Launceston, studying marine science with a major in fisheries management at the australian maritime college. Looking to make a difference to ensure the longterm sustainability of the things we all treasure!

Very keen recreational fisho, and at 21 I've been lucky enough to fish at a number of exotic locations such as the Rowley Shoals, Lord Howe and Rottnest Island. The next big trip is to Fiji in march next year, so looking forward to learning and gaining knowledge that will allow me land the GT of my dreams!!!

Cheers, Clay.

My name is Dan Smith.  I live in Los Angeles and have fished much of North and South America including Alaska, Canada, many parts of the continental US including Florida and California, Hawaii, Marshall Islands, Northern and Southern Baja Mexico, several other Mexico spots, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, Brazil, and Venezuela.  I like most types of fishing from 6-inch bluegill on worms to 500lb+ marlin and everything in between.  I haven't had a lot of luck with the GTs so far so I'm hoping to rectify that by getting on this forum and learning where to go and what to do.

G'day I'm Pat. This is my first post, I hope I can keep up the quality of others I have read.

My brother Tim from Perth introduced me to popper fishing at Rosalie Quay off Onslow WA and now I too am hooked.

I live near Brisbane and love reef and sport fishing. I have a 19 foot Haines Hunter and Tim has a 23 foot Sailfish.

We both fish Fraser mostly for reefies, but have looked at the history on this site about GTs up Nth at Fraser.

We will be going after them in October this year.

I read that many of you guys have had some good times up there and I hope we can find the grounds too and that the weather is kind.
We generally get mild Northerlies in October, does anyone have any suggestions please?

many thx
Pat
