Ewan, keep away from these. The only thing they're good for is being used as a quasi pencil popper; that is, cast it out and reel it back at a decent speed where it skips on the surface.

I can't get these things to swim at all.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

Thanks for the tip Brandon. I've come close to buying a few times under the impression they are a good functional shape.

i am wondering would this work better with soft tip rod on slow speed ??

Alex - surface stickbaits are a bit of an art form. To really get them to swim properly needs relatively calm conditions and a soft tipped rod. Most people I've seen fish them almost like a pencil popper but they designed to actually swim. The easiest of the surface stickbaits to fish is the Nomad Dogtooth or Wahoo and the Craftbait Realbait.

The hardest is the Mangrove Studio - I don't reckon Konishi could get this damn thing to swim properly!

Have tried these stickbaits with some success but i do agree with Brandon that they are difficult to work, but it is not impossible. First time out in choppy conditions i cldn't extract a favourable action, but when i used it next on another trip where the seas were flat i was surprised at the beautiful darting roll it produced. It subsequently nailed 4 GTs and a bluefin before i kept it from being hijacked!

Trick to it is a medium action rod (like for all other stickbaits) and fast but long twitches with enough pause time in between.

Attached a pic of an average specimen just under 15kgs.

Thanks guys, that rod was self-built from a prototype blank sourced direct from a manufacturer. Rated PE5-6, perfect match for the Stella 10000. Also landed this PB 42kg GT on the same outfit...
