advice PE 6 ish popping rod
July 31, 2009, 06:45:00 PM
After some advice on a PE6 or there abouts popping rod.  Primary use i guess is for lightening up for some fun on "smaller" fish or perhaps throwing smaller stickbaits and the like around inside the lagoon, or in our case off small shallower drop offs

after some advice on what reel would likely couple up to a rod of this kind as well, i have a few ideas but appreciate some info off people who may already chuck around 80g poppers and stuff

cheers

I've found both the Hot's Gipang 83H and Tide Lez 78MH to be good for lighter poppers like what u're aiming to use, though u might find it hard to load the heavier rod with such a light poppers. On the higher end of the scale i think the lighter TBLs and heavier BCs from the Carpenter range would suit u, i guess someone like Jon would be able to elaborate further.

Generally, typical GT poppers would weigh over 80gms so u might be better off using a tad heavier so u get better distance with your PE-6 line. Poppers 80gm and below would call for lighter rods which may not have the power needed to stop a big GT if u do hook one.

not really looking to stop big fish with this rod mate

we have a few areas that produce good school GT's to 8-10kg's

looking at the zenaq's at the moment

probably only use max orions stickies to 90 grams

8000HG stell will be the drive

Brad

The Zenaq Fokeeto 76-4 tuna or the 83-5 Trevally would be great rods to look at for these applications, also the GTK74PG, GTK70JP, and KGS70MH in the Smith range are well worth considering too.
I'll send you a PM with further info.

I have the Smith GTK70JP, It has quite a lot of power in that it can knock over good fish in short time, I think it's PE5. I use it for pencils and stickbaits up to about 110g, If you want to use poppers on this rod you will have to keep them small, ie cup face under 30mm. Lots of fun with this one...one day I will get a sail or sml black on it ;)

These are the ones I was talking to you about yesterday...

The GTK74PG is 7'4", PE5 and rated to 130g.

i got to agree with this ..
the smith are a great rod
i might get one later on .

if you still want pe6 then Hot Tide Lez 78MH is the go but it rated to 120g .
this has caught a 40kg gt on this rod that i was told by andrew from the hot,s
i think it got more backbone which it would be a cracker..

good luck to your decsison .
