Ian, if you want a GT popping rod, then you may find that you're better off with a specialised GT rod. There is nothing wrong with the Calstar blank but what you may find is that at seven feet, you are at a disadvantage from a casting perspective. Ideally, you'd want at least 7.5 feet in length for a popping rod.

I think it is a simple matter of physics, Ian. An eight foot purpose designed rod will cast better than a seven foot multi-purpose blank. You will of course often have times when GTs are milling around the back of your boat but GT popping is a sport of just repetitive casting and the longer and more often you have that popper in the water, the more fish you will catch. It is not a coincidence that the longest and best casters generally catch the most fish.

I don't think it would be a stretch to say I am a highly competent caster but the one angler who I fish with from time to time who has me covered easily is Damon Olsen from Nomad Sportfishing. Damon would be one of the best casters in the sport and he will outfish me easily four out of five days for the simple reason that he is a superior caster. On that one day, I will get lucky!  :D  but I think that superior casters make their own luck in this sport.

i suppose you could try to back your boat in to cater for the lack of distance but that isn't always feasible casting into some areas.

It's hard to say what distance you need. In the Maldives, try  100m but in some other places I've fished, you may only need a 50-60m cast. there will be areas you can't get your boat into where you need to hit a small spot that is 90m away. You will find that hard work with a seven foot Calstar.

The other thing is that the Calstar blank is a blank that is being adapated to use for popping. The specialised GT popping rods have been designed specifically for casting and popping. Most people who start with Calstars end up moving to the more specialsied rods in time.

That said, it would also be fair to say that the Calstars have proven themselves to be capable popping rods.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

Brandon, I thank you for your reply, I fully understand what you are saying,As a rod builder I get  great satisfaction building my own rods, is there a better blank, that I can build on ?   Ian

now I understand!

As a rodmaker, I fully understand where you are coming from.

Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of quality blanks which are available. SEED have some decent blanks today (their old Shirens weren't great) that would suit your purpose and one which I think is also worth looking at is a tuna popping blank from Ocean Revolution called the Black Devil 200. it is a blank that is designed for tuna popping with PE6 but considering that the blank has a max drag rating of 12kg, it can be used for PE8 for popping. It's also a Smith blank and Smiths have a proven reputation.

Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss further.

In the Maldives, try  100m

I've always wondered why you need so much casting distance in the Maldives, care to explain Brandon?

Hi Guys / Brandon

Im a South African guiding in Mozambique. Due to lack of specialised GT tackle available in SA we dont get much choice on a rods but a little while back when i was in South Africa imet up with a guy that had a Calstar Blank 7ft 100lb. I bought it off him and had it built. Im not saying what u said is not true a slightly longer rod definatly is at a better casting advantage but when i first got it i battled with casting. Since then a while back i spooled up a reel with 80 pound power pro braid and with the better braid im getting more than enough distance and have got some really good fish. Again im not disputing what u said but just giving my experience with the calstar

I get around 65-70m and can push it out to 80m casting with my 700H using PE8, I am happy with the rod overall as I can pop up to 125 Cuberas and work stick-baits no problem, I have also caught Ambos on it Jigging from the belt. The Calstars are tough all-rounders with a med-fast taper which can take a bit more rougher treatment in fighting a fish or laying around a boat. Obviously I go to my Zenaq or KD for dedicated popping but at under  1/2 the price the Calstar has it's place for shore .

PS: Not a clear tip, just reflection  ;D

Jay, it is a combination of the structure, the depth and the type of boats they use

In the Maldives, try  100m

I got a recipe for the 700H off Hal Harvey at Bluewater tackle Western Australia.  Works fine, love it.  I've probably got it on the computer somewhere but can't find it at the moment.

I'm assuming Cooktown spots are similar to Cairns and you're not going to need long casts to get onto fish.  Having said that I'm very happy with the distance I get out of the Calstar.

I've used a Couple of 8ft rods in Cairns and whilst they cast further, I simply don't need that extra distance and the shorter rod is easier to play and control the fish with.  I would also argue that in some of the shallower bommie country a longer cast gives the fish more chance of bricking you, especially with things like Red Bass around. Better to move up on such spots with the boat to give yourself less line out to start with.

The Calstar is going to be a little heavier than the Japanese style of rods but the difference is only going to be 100grams max.  I can live with that.

These are just my own observations from fishing the reefs out of Cairns.  My Calstar has caught literally hundreds of GT's and handled some terrible abuse.  For the price I say they are great value.

Here's a vid I've posted up before of the Calstar in action.  My mate is using a Shimano GT Special.  Both using PE8.  I'm the one in the brown hat.  I caught more fish than him (as usual), though that's probably not just because of the rod...

I would like to thank every one for there replies,I will build the GR700H ,for someone starting out in  this style of fishing, I think this is the way to go,It seems to be a very expensive style of fishing, any cost saving would help more people enjoy it,If the rod is not as good as the top shelf ones, so be it ,It is a starting point. Thank you all   Ian
