Caranx Kaibatsu - anyone interested?
July 20, 2007, 10:05:28 AM
Guys - there seems to be a fair bit of interest in these rods. Now, no promises but if there is enough interest and people are willing to commit to the purchase, I will arrange for a parcel to be sent it from overseas.

I will obviously need firm commitments from people to do this as I do not want to be stuck with the rods. In other words, you commit to the purchase!! The price will obviously be landed cost on this end (includes freight, customs duty and GST).

If you're keen, contact me and let me know which model you want.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

no hurry at this stage - I am simply gauging interest. I am unable to give you a figure for freight or duty at this stage because it is dependent on how many we order. The freight for one rod from Singapore by Fedex is something like $80 to $90 SING.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

no worries, Jay.
To make it worthwhile, I think we will need a minimum of five rods. If we can get that many buyers, I'll get back in touch with everyone to get a confirmation and go from there.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

Guys - sorry if I got anyone hopes up but it's just a bit too hard. I've done some figures and once you add the duty, GST etc, I think its getting to a price where the Daiwa Saltigas come into play and they are a damn good stick.

Sorry   :'(

Brandon, where can I get some specs on these.
I am definitely up for a couple if as you say the price is around the Saltiga mark.
I use a Saltiga SG GT86 a fair bit and while it may not be the most macho rod out there I reckon the all round combination of casting distance and grunt I get from it as well as durability makes them a pretty good thing.

In case you and others weren't aware Brandon, the range has 5 rods all designed for poppers/stickbaits rated for lines from PE2 - PE12. A bit more to choose from than the Saltiga range - hopefully the Shimano range will prove to be as good or better than.

(LP-Fast Action-7ft6) S7604 Light Pleasure
Light Pleasure has been developed for anglers wishing to target medium size fish without having to use extra heavy equipment that tires them down prematurely. This fast action rod is ideally suited for PE2-4 line using poppers below 100g. It is versatile enough to use with a wide range of lures, be it poppers or stickbaits and is a enjoyable way to appreciate the sport of popping without the aftereffects of sore arms.

(PI-Mid Fast-8ft4) S8406 Pencil Instrument
Pencil Instrument has been design with a mid-fast action with a light tip to load and propel these lures great distances. Suited for PE lines 4-6 and lures up to 150g, the PI is ideal for targeting species such as Trevallies, Yellowfin and large Mahi Mahi. With this rod you can now target previously unreachable spots with your pencil poppers and translate every flick of the rod to an enticing dart of your lure.

(LC-Mid Fast-8ft2) S8208 Long Cast
Suited for PE6-8 lines and poppers to 200g, this versatile stick is a marriage of both casting ability and fish stopping power. If you are targeting large GTs that are street-smart and tend to swim away from the boat, this rod will give you a superior advantage over other anglers in sneaking in trophy fish right under their noses. The LC is also ideal for popping in areas whereby the boat cannot get too close to the reef due to safety reasons.

(DM-Progressive-8ft) S8012 Deep Monster
Deep Monster models are specialist rods for PE8-12 lines and poppers to 300g. They are the rods to use for Monster Giant Trevally in excess of the magical 50kg mark that patrol ocean atolls. When you fish such areas, the GTs that live there fight deep and dirty. In such conditions, the only way to stop such a rampaging brute without the angler going overboard is to use a progressive action rod to lessen the load on the fisherman and yet put tremendous pressure on the fish. This is the essence of what this rod was designed for.

(SM-Mid Fast-7ft) S7812 Surface Monster
Another specialist rod in the stable is the Surface Monster. The SM is another heavy artillery suited for PE8-12 lines and poppers to 300g. It is used for situations whereby the angler targets monster fish patrolling shallower reefs systems. In instances like this, a faster action rod is needed to immediately dictate terms to the fish or the battle will be lost. This mid fast action has the ability to virtually stop and turn a monster in its tracks and it also allows the angler to punch out big poppers on extra heavy PE line more easily. It is also built shorter to maximize the leverage the angler has on the fish.

Would the long cast or deep monster be better for fishing 80lb braid and would the deep momster be able to cast poppers as light as 150g?

Thanks
Ivan

I used the Long Cast on a recent trip and its probably the better rod to use for 150gm poppers. Ive been casting lures from 85gm to 150gm, plus the hardwares. This rod is quite stiff compare to.......say an equivalent Smith WRC rod. The Deep Monster I would imagine would be a lot stiffer given that its rated to 300gm. If you're running PE8 I would go the Long Cast.
