August 02, 2010, 04:02:22 AM
Hi all
I recently bought a JM 200 S
my question are will a Stella SW 8000 pg fit this rod or is it to large for the rod.

Michael

I own a JM200s, and have used it with a range of different reel sizes.  I reckon the sw8000 is at the upper end of the range of use, whilst it is usable, its probably not ideal if you are predominantly chasing small to medium fish on PE3 - PE4 (which is what the rod is designed for).  At these line weights I find it well suited to a saltiga 4500 and PE4.

If you are feeling really sporting and generally catching smaller fish it will also balance well as a light outfit with a sw5000 - 6000 or a daiwa 3500 - 4000 reel (and PE2 or PE3).

As I said, don't chuck out the 8000 as it is workable, just not ideally balanced.

Hmm.....I disagree.....partly. Yes the SW8000 is the largest reel you would use on that rod but the Saltiga 4500 is very similar in size to the SW8000 as well. I know as I had both reels and yes both reel I had PE4. You can certainly go smaller reels but no less than a SW 5000/6000 or Saltiga Game 3500 and either reel you can run up to PE3.

Id say you are fine with the SW8000 for that rod. The rod will seem a bit mismatching as its a very slim blank but as long as it balances well.

Hello Peter and Hon- Su
Thanks alot for your advice.
I was afraid the swpg 8000 was to heavy.
i found the swpg 8 at around 585 euro, which is 100 less then normal around here.
Unfortunately not the 5 or 6 k swpg.

Michael, there is a really big difference in size between a SW 5000/6000 and the SW 8000/10000 - I've grouped them here because they are the same reel with slightly different spool sizes.  I wont say the 5000/6000 is a toy, because it is not, it clearly has its place in the light to medium tackle range.  But it has no where near the fish stopping power of the 8000/10000.  If you are only going to spot the coin for 1 reel - I think your choice in the 8000 is the one to go for, it will provide you with a range of medium to heavy options with the purchase of a couple of spare spools down the track (8000/10000/12000)!  Tight lines!
