Jig rod advice
September 17, 2010, 05:40:06 PM
What an awesome site !!

I am searching for a jig rod to suit my 20000sw, here is some info that hopefully will help:

Fishing depths of 50-100 metres
Jigs around the 400 gram mark
PE 6-8
Length of no shorther than 5'
Target species Kingies, Sampsons and Tuna
Drag settings between 10-12kgs
Budget of around $500 for either a new or second hand - don't mind either way
I am 6' tall and weigh 83kgs
We fish out of 6-8 metre trailer boats

I am currently using a wilson texalium 15-24 kg but this is far from a jig rod

Cheers

Brett  ;D

The Smith AMJ-S52EX is an awesome rod. I have mine matched to the 20K Stella.

Brett, I'm another fan of the 52EX, very light in the hand and a heap of grunt (great all day jigger).  Jigging master also do some great rods in 50 gram jig increments (Powerspells), the new 3 Kings M might also suit - its rated 250 - 400 grams but I reckon its got a heap of balls and stands up to a lot of abuse!

My no1 Jig rod at the moment is the AMJ 52EXS [I'm Nirai-less], good to work and heaps of grunt, a preferred rod over a stump puller for ease of use over extended long periods .

Not very original, but another vote for the Smith AMJ 52EX spinning here. Absolutely love this rod in lots of different ways. I  have never used a rod with so much lifting power that is so kind to the body.

One tiny gripe is that it is rated to jig weights of 400 grams but I think it loses efficiency with anything over 350, particularly if you are fishing in a strong current.

Hi Brett

As Peter says Jigging Master make a large range of jigging rods in 50 gram increments in the Power Spell range, also they come in a range of colours to suit us fussy fisherman. Also the new Jigging Master Three Kings Special rods are a unbelievable rod.
Where about's are you based there might be a stockiest near you to view ? we also might be able to sort out some samples for you to try ?
If you would like to see a couple of Jigging Master DVDs to see the rods in action let me no and I will send a couple out.

Cheers Andrew
