PE Line Conditioners & Cleaning
August 27, 2007, 09:26:25 PM
I've been using Varivas PE Line Conditioner over the last year or so and have generally found my lines have been maintaining their integrity for longer and lasting longer than those that are not treated, of course i still feel the need to use it longer to make a definative comparison but my initial judgement has been that is has been money well spent and a treatment worth doing regularly.

Are there any members out there that treat their lines with a specialised line conditioner?
What brands do you use?

Looking forward to all comments.

Luke - what does the line conditioner actually do for the line? I've seen it for sale but haven't bought it before.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

It is designed for regular maintenance and treatment of PE lines.

Basically it creates a protective film/coating that assists to prevent line detorioration and assists to descrease friction/resistance when travelling through rod guides. Also quoted as delivering smoother casting and longer distance per cast.

Gentlemen: I am not a GT fisherman but use some of the lighter-duty products designed for them and have learned much from those of you who are GT fisher-people.  I have Ultra Jig man line on all my Stellas and just purchased some some Varivas conditioner.  So I cannot vouch for it but I have a couple of questions to tag end onto this thread if you don't mind, Luke:

(1) How do you apply the stuff?

(2) Is it supposed to help with casting distance?

Thanks.  I don't read Japanese as well as I used to.   :)

I don't really know anyone that uses it so i've had to work out my own way of doing it.

Apply a liberal amount to a cloth and have an empty bucket handy. Leaving the reel on the rod, with line through the guides and bail arm open - continue to strip line off into the bucket, slowly and gently pulling the line through the cloth in your hands. I do this for around 100m of line.

I then carefully tie/attach the line to a small metal pole (anything that won't damage the line and is solid) that is then held by another person. Carefully move away (be careful not to tangle the line!) in order to stretch the line taught and then proceed to reel the line on under tension so that the line is tightly packed. I obviously do this in an open area on a grass surface (e.g. grass in front of my house).

It is supposed to help with casting. Casting certainly feels very smooth but i can't say conclusively that it gives me the ability to cast further. Surely the smoothness means less friction which means more distance  ;D

I've just bought a spool of varivas GT smp to put on my dogfight, do you sugest conditioning the whole line on spooling up or just the top 100m or so , looked on plat site & it says it applies a coating to surface of line but I don't know if it actually soaks in to the core of the line to protect it over time .
Cheers Chris

You generally have to mortgage one of your children for a spool, don't you?  :D

Yeh , not cheap but soooooo slick & thin, PE 8 (120lb) looks same dia as 60lb jigging braid, when you think about it you are getting 2 full spools (600m) of the best you can get so not really much of decision plus kids all moved out long time ago, (more for me)

it's a beautiful line as it should be at the price. I got a spool each in the two poundages it has been released in but I have't quite worked out yet how I'm going to use it.

Hi Chris,

Sorry for the delay in my response.

The whole process has really been a big experiment. I can't tell you for sure if it is the best option but noticing the differences it has made to my lines would prompt me to do the whole line if i were in your situation (which i am now, need to buy some more line).

I would classify this item as a consumable. In the scheme of things, it is quite cheap - use it as much as you feel necessary.

Keen to grab some spools very soon - can't wait!

Hey Guys,
Have seen a lot of Japanese guys use silicon based sprays while casting to lessen tangles abd increase casting distance.
Never used any other products other than warm water to soak the salt out of the braid....aluminium spools get a tad pitted from corrosion if you don't at least do this.
I am interested in the Varivas product though I guess unless it displaces water & salt (WD-40??) then rinsing the casting length plus any other line that is wet underneat is mandatory....as is a GOOD drying out to prevent sweating down deep on the spool....don't need Gremlins in expensive gear!!!

Aaron.
