Rod stuck together

Hey guys,

I have made the rookie mistake of leaving a two piece rod stuck together too long. I didn't realise it was fully joined, thought it was just loosely sitting in the butt join and sitting in my rod rack as that is how I usually leave them if I am leaving them together. However, I went to take it apart last night and she is solid.

I tried putting some frozen peas on the join to see if I could get it to shrink a little and move it, no joy at all. Not even a budge.

Any tips? My efforts may have been slightly hampered as I was alone, I have had more success in the past taking stubborn rods apart with two people, but any suggestions would be welcome.

definitely need 2 people and I would also have used frozen peas I had trouble with a new rod using the peas and I found that when you thought it was cold leave it for another 5 to get colder!
Also for added grip I have used an old pushbike tube cut up and wrapped around the rod.

I think the cold thing works because of the different shrink/expansion rates of the two sections due to the difference in diameter and wall thickness, so maybe try getting it cold then warm up a few times to try to break the join.

Have you tried a rod belt?

No matter how long she's been stuck - it's about the grip!

I've had rods stuck together for months and months - if attempted with hands or inadequate grip - simply will not work!

Get a name brand rod belt from Smith or Fisherman, find an old wetsuit with grip on the knees (etc), clear plastic vinyl laminate etc...

How about a pair of those dish washing gloves? Admittedly it is not as glamorous and name brand rod belts but might do the job.
When i was changing the handle on my new 3000 Certate (2010 model) the Daiwa maintenance dept suggested this as the cap was super tight. Worth a try eh!

Dishwashing gloves are a good alternative...

Had this happen as well to me  quite a few times dishwashing gloves and another person put goves on hold the rod whil the other person holds the handle and you both pull  and the person holding the butt twists the diswashing gloves somehow become tighter and tighter and does your grip on the rod blank the  butt  should come out , Tried the cold compress didnot work or could just be not cold enough

All the above will work but if it is still stuck take it to a tackle shop with a big bait freezer and let the sucker chill out for a while then try again with good rod belts and 2 people. If that don't work get hold of Lowy.
Don't under any circumstances leave it with "Joe Blow" tackle expert as I have seen some disasters when the wrong people try using pliers/vice etc

Hi Scott,

In most cases rod belts and two people will do the trick but if it doesn't then what we do in store is put a few drops of protecta oil into the join.  We leave that for a few hours or overnight then sit the rod in the freezer for a couple of hours.  Then using a rod belt and two people we pull it apart.  You can do this at home but if the frozen peas aren't working for you then you can always try a bag of ice from the servo.  Wrap the ice bag in a towel so the rod doesn't get wet.  The rod needs to get pretty cold.

As Crusty said if all else fails take it to a tackle store ask them have they done it before and what they are going to do BEFORE they do anything.  We had a guy who bought a rod into us that he had taken into a tackle store.  They used vice grips on it and almost destroyed the rod.  We got it apart using the method above (and then had to get the rod repaired for him from the damage by the grips).

The biat freezer works a treat,its been done many times in our shop befor and while your waiting you get to walk around a tackle shop and suss out more gear...

Thanks guys, I was trying it using my ripple fisher rod wrap for grip which has always done the job in the past but this mofo is stuck solid

Will try some of the above. Might have to enroll the help of the wife, but I am concerned that it may come back to bite me somehow....you should never let them see you vulnerable

On a similar topic, what is the best method if the rod is currently in 2 pieces, but the join is so tight, the tip section doesn't want to slide into the join on the butt? Do you lube it with grease/vas or something? I seem to remember someone saying something about candle wax?

With all the talk of stuck rods, butts, rubber gloves and lube I feel this topic is getting a bit "out there" don't you 

Angus , don't use lube mate, wax is the go. You can use plain wax like the little oil burner things or get a proper rod wax stick from some of the sponsors. By waxing the joins you will lesson the chance of it sticking too

Will give the wax a go and see if that helps the join.

i have used ,dental dam ,latex sheets that seems the best ,remember twist and pull  you will need 2 people and the dental dam ,i can  get some for you also i have some other sheets that will work,try putting it in the sun frist.the hollow part will expand before the thicker part  will .As i cast metal  for a living ,
