Tweed Heads At Its Very Best
January 28, 2011, 08:24:56 AM
After our successful trip out last week I recd the phone call on Sunday arvo from Stew, weathers looking good tomorrow mate you good to go, I replied silly question what time we heading out mate !
At the boat ramp around 5am set for another big day on the water, then we got to the bar where two other boats where sitting back scared s*#t less to go out and I didn't blame them, mate are we going though that I ask him, silly question, a few bursts and quick turns back in another burst out and I was packing myself, a huge wave rolling in and full speed ahead straight for it, next thing we dropped out the other side hard on the gas heading out into some huge lumpy seas, oh s#*t I was thinking.
We had a wee troll around the nine mile as there had been reports a few YFT being caught, no luck after 20mins or so so we slower started to troll out to some jigging spots.
No luck on the skirts so it was time to drop some jigs down to see what was biting. A few smaller AJs and sambos for a start so we then headed to spot X.
Spent a while trying to fine the fish and when we did it was all on. This was the same spot I got a good size kingie from last week. This week I was armed with a new combo to try a Jigging Master PE3 reel and a new Jigging Master Ocean God 180 gram jig stick.
The lumo rocket was sent down deep and after a few cranks a solid fish was hooked. After a tug of war for the first minute I finally started getting some line back a couple of minutes later a nice AJ come to the surface.

The biggest AJ for the day.

The JM PE3 and Ocean God that done the damage.

Not long later and Stew was onto a nice kingie, once again the lumo jig was on fire.

The kingie's come on the chew a few were boated in no time at all.

This boy had some funny looking spots.

After I got smoked by a solid fish we started to head out wide for a troll, the weather was starting to come round and it was going to be another magic day out there.
On the way out we come across a floating log, we slowed down and cruised past and you wouldn't believe your eyes, there was about 20-25 mahi mahi under it.
Stew chucked a plastic on and myself a metal, what a sight 5-10 mahi mahi chasing his plastic, it didn't take long and he was on to a nice fish, I chucked the metal out and was soon connected as well, Stew lost his as mine come to the boat and all of a sudden it jumped about 1.8m out of the air right next to the boat, I was tempted just to pull him in but there was a few rods around so that would have been a bad idea.

My wee mahi mahi.

What a day so far we couldn't believe our luck and it was only 11am. We meet up with some other boys keen to go out and troll some skirts at a spot where a few good marlin get caught. On the way out in the distance was a amazing sight, a huge colour change from green to a amazing blue, this will do us no point heading out another 15kms when the good water is here.
We chucked the witch doctor and bird teaser out with just three lures for now, only 3-4mins later after getting the spread out the right rigger was hit, just a small smack that we didn't see and all of a sudden there was a 100 plus kg marlin dancing across the surface, after some huge air time he went deep, Stew chucked the gimbal and harness on while I dragged everything else in, 700-800m of line had disappear on the first run so it was time to get some back.

Stew hooked up.

After about 45mins it was in sight and now the fun job of tracing my first marlin, that wasn't to bad the fun part was grabbing its bill for the first 20 seconds or so.

I got him under control.

Stew with his marlin.

A few photos and he was on his way to live another day. Another hour or so passed with nothing so we started to troll along the current line towards home, we were just sending out a shotgun when another smack on the left rigger this time, line screaming of the reel but no jumps so unsure what we were onto here, I chucked the harness on took a seat and started to reel him in.

It was just a dead weight on the end so unsure what we had until it got close to the boat a fell hooked wahoo came to the surface.

My first wahoo.

About now we were rather tired it had been another long day on the water so we got the gear in cracked a couple of beers and headed for home.

Another report to follow next week with any luck.

Cheers Coxy

Awesome report, good to see the tweed firing.  To get fish on plastics, jigging and on the troll would be an awesome day all round.  Have tuesday off next week might be up for the drive south :)

Jump in a boat and head out then Pete, once you find the blue water it will be game on more than likely.

Still quiet up this way, found the demarcation line of Blue water 14nm out on Tuesday, a bit of life showing but nothing caught, my tally for two trips was a Bronze Whaler on a Halco Crazy Deep  :o, other reports were the odd Mahi Mahi and Wahoo, it will happen !
