I thought it would better to bring this to your attention for flight arrangement in Australia if you are thinking to get EP85/36.

Packed length of EP85/36 is 1860mm and length of rod tube will most likely exceeds 1.9m. What this means is you won't be able to check-in your rod tube to some of Jetstar flight with aircraft A320, A321 and B737.

When you fish with Nomad Sportfishing off Hamilton Island for example, you will be better to book Virgin Blue flight for Australian domestic flight from / to Hamilton Island.

Also with NZ internal flights (Auckland - Tauranga) Tak, although they where OK with our Rod Cases at 2m.

"Similarly the aircraft operated on Link services have a maximum length of 1.8 metres.  If your package dimensions exceed - Length 1.8m x Width 0.8m x Height 1.20 m, please contact your local Air New Zealand office for assistance. There may be occasions when items such as poles, skis, fishing rods etc may still be accepted on Air New Zealand Link aircraft up to 2.2m (7' 2") due to their minimal volume".

Hi Dan,

EP82/37 will be EP82/38 in production. It's not too far away and we can probably post some review in early September.

Tak

In prep for a trip to Coral Sea i spoke to Virgin Blue today who advised that the max length of luggage on their planes is 3m............... but then again, she also told me that i cannot have a fishing reel (after i explained what it was), even with no line in my hand carry so who knows..........

I actually find Virgin Blue Pretty good with that stuff.  They have a great sporting equipment policy - nothing is too hard to get on board, unlike Jetstar 'Get Stuffed' as they are commonly referred to.

The trouble with J'Star is those wheely trolleys that they use for luggage - if it doesn't fit in it doesn't travel!  It used to be that they were happy to put in a rod tube diagonally and pack around it (2.0m), now if it doesn't fall flat to the the bottom with a thud (1.9m) it will be discarded, hence the ever reducing length limit.  We would all be fishing with 5 pieces if J'Star had anything to do with it.

And it's great to see their luggage policy is ingrained in the psyche of all staff members too, from the guy who totes the orange mop to the orange merecedes driving exec.  They can spot a 1.92m long rod tube clear accress the width of a crowded airport..........and will jump at any opportunity to demonstrate this keen eye.

Be warned!

Never heard a good word about Jetstar! Think I will just steer clear of them :)

Virgin Blue on the other hand have been awesome, so kudos to them. They give an additional allowance for sporting goods (can't remember exactly how much but I think it was 10kg??) and it easily accommodates a carmate with 7 rods in it  ;D Never had a problem.

The Virgin Blue sporting allowance is now gone (apparently).

We found out this week travelling to and from Hobart/Sydney.

The new Virgin Australia policy changes from 20kg up to 23kg, but has taken away the 'nominal weight' 5kg Sporting Goods allowance, which makes it irrelevant to carry 5kg of Jigs and poppers in the Airliner :'( (George Pang beware ;D).
Air NZ also charges over the 1 Bag x 23kg allowance, with an extra $40 up to 32kg or a 2nd bag at $40 with a 50% discount for sporting goods, that is ROD CASE as 2nd bag $40-20 = 20.

New Virgin Australia Policy:
If you have booked on or after 9th December, 2010

If you are travelling with Sports Equipment on a Virgin Australia domestic and/or Pacific or Polynesian Blue International flight, all sporting equipment will form part of your purchased checked baggage allowance for Blue Saver or GO! Fares or the inclusive checked baggage allowance for Velocity Gold and Silver Members or for Guests travelling on Flexible, Corporate Plus or Premium Economy fares.
Excess baggage charges will apply once the full baggage allowance has been exceeded.
If you are taking only sporting goods and you are travelling on a Blue Saver or GO! fare, you will be required to purchase the checked baggage allowance of up to 23 kg. Remember you can pre-purchase this allowance on the internet or by calling our Guest Contact Centre before you arrive at the airport otherwise you will be charged a higher fee at the airport.

Hi Tak,

One more question. While waiting for the release of the EP 85/36, I can read at Carpenter's website that the EP 82/38 is expected to hit the market in June 2011 ( http://www.carpenter.ne.jp/2011.05.02.ep82.38/2011.05.02.ep82.38.htm ). Will they appear at the same time or is it likely to assume that EP 85/36 will appear several weeks prior to the release of EP 82/36? When I use the term "market", I refer to any Carpenter agent  - irrespectively of the location (e.g. Japan, Australia, Europe).

Today, a Japanese tackle shop has informed me that the EP 85/36 will not be produced for a while, whereas Carpenter is now busy  producing the EP 82/38. This shop staff may be misinformed about the actual release plans. Hopefully, you could clarify this for me. Again - thank you very much for your assistance!

Best wishes,
Dan

Hi Dan,

Information on their website is basically the schedule for Japanese domestic market and we often have different models and timeframe in overseas. For instance EP85/36 has been on their market since February and word from shop is for what they get there. I'll get ours updated here.

Cheers,
Tak
