Peter: We set out today on the search for a GT but things were a little
slower than we anticipated managing to stick 3 nice size GTs and lose one that would have been around the 30kg mark and lost a 25kg dogtooth tuna. We trolled the same ledge to see if there were any other doggies there and managed to hook 1 but only get the head back. With the shallows fishing so well this week we decided to hit them up for the remainder of the day. We caught all the reef species you would expect to catch the best fish were two 4-6kg Maori wrasse, a 9kg Blue spot trout, heaps of big Red Bass, a few big long nose emperors and a flowery cod that would of gone 15kgs. All in all a good days fishing!!
Damon:- Another great day at Jewell. We started in the shallows, and didn't leave pretty much all day. The action was thick and fast and we caught over
25 species of fish today!!! We did stop for a few casts on a deep ledge and got a nice 20kg GT on a popper in 45m of water, with the fish smashing the lure boatside in spectacular style. However, the shallow reef areas continued to produce consistent non stop action and we had everything from bluefin and green jobfish in 1m of water and breaking waves to 25kg maori wrasse in blue holes. We caught plenty of smaller 10-20kg GTs on the light tackle, and so many big red bass I lost count. The guys onboard were keeping count, and we caught over 60 fish for the day. All up another spectacular day at Jewell, and I am looking forward to another one tomorrow.
John: Consistency was the name of the game today, we started out fishing the breakers on the outside of Jewell and must have seen 20 GTs before we finally boated one, but from then on we steadily caught fish for the rest of the day including a beautifully coloured Wrasse of about 10kg, the shallows produced some monster trout that where just too good for as we would watch them eat our stickbaits and in the blink of an eye destroy us on the reef none of these fish where under 8kg and just to be sure we anchored up for lunch and went for a snorkel to check these bad boys out. After lunch we cruised our way down for some more GT action and picked off another half a dozen nice fish up to 22kg and some cracking red bass that even tested the guys on the heavier GT gear, another solid day's fishing where the time just flies.
Alex- We had a bit of a different plan today and ran south in Salty. We had a fairly consistent morning boating some trout, red bass and GTs casting the reef edge as well as losing a nice wrasse. The morning was spent with moments of excitement when looking ahead and spotting a mobile bommie but frustratingly it turned out to be schools of big milkfish. Then we spotted the motherload. A massive mobile bommie! These things are something to behold when you see big gts cruising down sea towards you in there hundreds. We ended up catching about 25 out of the bommie over an hour and a half. During the madness I put a go pro in the water and the footage blew my mind. Where from the surface it looks like a couple of hundred GTs it is actually thousands. We ended by trolling some baits around in the hope for a marlin but the unicorn fish proved to be nonexistant.
