Re: Rod Selection Help Needed

I can't find a PE6 8' popper rod for 180g poppers, only the CV79?

Mark

Carpenter SP80M is a popper rod with the following specs. PE 6~8 , Casting tw. ~190 gr. , Max drag : 10 kg and weigh 400 gr. .

True Jon and there are other examples according to manufacturers. However, I can't imagine efficiently working a 180 gram chugger with an SP80M, say a Cubera 180. Can you?

The weight of chugger may not be the all determining factor , most guys use heavy chugger because they have to use it due to casting against the wind but most guys prefer to use lighter chugger but work it EFFECTIVELY to create the correct stroke to get it's maximum spray . As for the stiffness of SP80M , it's rated by Carpenter to be a 43 lbs rod as compared to CV79/40 and DJ83MH which are 40 lbs. rod , hence if CV79/40 or DJ83MH can do the job then SP80M which is mostly a chugger rod by design can do it better chugging wise albeit it may not be good to work a stickbait effectively .

Hey mark,
The heavy rods like wv and fire vortex are designed for heavy lures. They will not cast a 100g lure very far at all! The blank won't load without sufficient weight. Heavy line class rod generally means heavy lures. Pe10 rods won't cast 150g lures as well and will be to stiff to work stickbaits lighter than 150g. Maybe you should look at a ripple fisher ug79h. Works heavy stickbaits and lighter poppers beautifully and has heaps of power down low. A very good light pe10 rod IMO.

I have used the SP80M extensively. The rod really is ideal for poppers like a Sea Frogs like a SF140 or 135PP but any more than that is a struggle. The rod just saturates too much. I have used it for poppers up to a Fullscale Kong 200 (weighs 160g) and boy, it was struggling!!

That was my impression as well Brandon but I have never owned one of these, only used a borrowed one.  I seem to remember I was using it with a Cubera 125 and it was a quite excellent set up.  I couldn't imagine using it with a 180 gram popper, and I am pleased to hear that my impression was your actual experience.

Chris, quote from Brandon in the "Guide to buying a GT rod" post:

"Many people want a very wide variance in terms of casting weights which is understandable. I can only say that if this is the case, a rod with a more progressive action will be more forgiving in this regard. An example is a Smith Komodo Dragon which will cast a 100g weight competently but will also cast a 200g weight. A Carpenter Wild Violence is also similar in that it can cast lighter lures better than its stable mate, the SP78UHL which is the same weight class but which is designed specifically for huge cup mouthed poppers."

Thanks for the other examples though, its all good food for thought.  Its still a while yet untill I hand over the folding and all resourch is good:- especially with the $'s involved!

Mark, i do agree with the sentiment expressed in this thread so far that you really don't need PE10 for your location. If you have read my guide to rods, you will have noted that i do suggest people go as light as they can get away with.

The KD will cast a wide range of weights but a lighter rod will still be more suitable.

As Brandon says in the Guide to buying a rod post, there is no perfect rod, its all compromise.  I can afford 4 casting outfits for GT's and anything else that likes the bait, light and heavy poppers and stick baits, so yes I will end up with an overkill PE10 popper rod!

That's very true but as you are buying 3 rods (and you have one already) at the higher end of things, you ought be able to cover most bases.
