Braid for ryoga
Mark Gwynne:
I'm looking for some good braid for the new Ryoga Bay jigging I just bought. The Daiwa tournament 8 accudepth 50 lb is 0.26 mm or PE 2.5 which looks great.
Anyone have any experience with this braid? The Jerry Brown 50 lb is 0.33 mm which is PE 4 and I've heard good things about it but it's thicker according to the specs.
Unfortunately I can't look at both so will have to buy without seeing first hand. Any advice appreciated and other options welcome.
Thanks, Mark.
Andre van Wyk:
Mark - Anything over PE 2 is too much for the Ryoga in my opinion... not because of the reels ability, but rather its capacity....
I only managed to squeeze on 200 metres of YGK Ultra PE 2 which is very skinny....
If Capacity is not an issue, then PE2.5 would be no problem, but you'll only get 150 to 180 metres on there...
If you looking at Jerry Brown, I would rather look at the 20lb, the 50lb in my opinion is waaaaay to thick for that reel...
Mine is still spooled with the YGK Ultra PE 2, but I'm down to only about 140 metres left after bust offs and such, which happen alot on that light braid, especially when its as skinny as YGK Ultra... am respooling soon and will be going with Jerry Brown in 20lb...
Dave Creffield:
I'd tent to agree with Andre, 50lb may be pushing it with this reel. I run PE3 Varivas Avani 10x10 and find it perfect for what I need.
Not sure how much I'd have on the spool but I have enough left when dropping 180ft, A little more would be better.
Creffo.
Mark Gwynne:
Sweet thanks guys. The max depth for this outfit will be around 140 feet so PE 2.5 looks ok now. 150 metres should be enough as the target fish shouldn't go much about 10 kilos. Andre good to know you think the reel will handle this heavier line, I wasn't sure as it's so light. I'll still fish it a little lighter than 50 lb (say max 5 to 6 kilos of drag) so hopefully it will reduce those extra bust offs you speak of when using really light braid.
Anesh Patel:
I agree with Andre, line capacity is the only issue if you want to run anything higher than PE2
I run PE 2 on my Ryoga over a Synit Deepshot 100g rod.
I will be changing down to PE1.5 on my Ryoga to run over the new Synit Kaha 50g rod to be released next year :)
