Been busy working and spending time with the family before the kids head out for the summer with there Grandpa but here's some action from the past couple days, been doing some exploring looking for new spots and been getting lucky finding fish in areas I have not fished before. Also ran into an old childhood friend who I hardly see and was privileged to put him on his very first Ulua/GT.

So i'm driving up to my parents house to get my boat and run into him as all our parents still live in the same neighborhood we grew up in, classic local Hawaii. I say howzit and what you doing? he says just came up to cut mom's grass. my response, like go fish for a couple hours? my buddy "Shoots" in Hawaii it means OK  . Little did he know he would be hooking up to the biggest fish he caught to date, He was stoked and floored but not as happy as me for giving him the opportunity to catch the "Big One". Heres what it looks like when you catch a Ulua for the very first time. You never know when your day comes!

Fish Measured 45"/114cm, fight time was 8 minutes on a heavy drag. Note that my buddies biggest fish before this was a trumpet fish less than a pound or kilo . For all you guys throwing lures waiting for that big boy its out there waiting for you never give up, and if I can I hope i'm there with you cheering you on to TUNDA!

Introducing my buddy to GT Popping

Hold um off brah you got this.......

Boost........

This is what it looks like to fight a green GT on a heavy drag for the first time, give um Keoni!!!

Almost done, Finish him!!!

Reap the rewards and enjoy the moment, congrats my Braddah and well done.......GTFC

Some action from the next day exploring with the LunchBox Gurus.....

Vinh and Ladd having some fun, Light tackle and Heavy Tackle......

Got to have some fun too, GTFC/Heru Ulua 150 "Poi Pounda" and the Race Point 250...

Aloha!

That is an amazing fish for a first GT. Hope I'm half as lucky when I get there in December  :)

Awesome Charles, all of the fish that you don't blink an eye at, are potentially the fish of a lifetime for someone else, and it looks like you get as much enjoyment out of it as they do! ;)

He stops the run and goes to work, big boosts with the Race point 200.

Release!

Carpenter Sea Frog/KLL edition and Monster Hunter EXT. First time using this lure I picked it up at Pro Shop Mogi this was the only time I have ever seen a sea frog for sale in a store....

GTFC/Heru Ulua 150 Poi Pounda and TBL 80/40........

Some action with Ladd Yoshimura earlier in the week GTFC/Heru Cubera 150 Poi Pounda and MH Ext.....

Aloha........

On a side not Duane has caught more than his fare share of Ulua from shore in the past but this was his first GT Popping and I was excited to put him on it as a while back he had unknowingly helped me catch my first Ulua from shore when I finally moved back to Hawaii. I had briefly talked to him in a tackle shop one day asking all kinds of questions trying to catch my first Ulua that helped me out big time. So it was awesome to return the favor and put him on a fish popping for the first time.

Aloha

Would like to know what you think of the MH Extreme once you've put a few fish in the boat with it

Charles, Ladd, Nathan, Vinh you guys are killing it out there!  Seeing all those fish you've been catching reminds me that there are still plenty of ulua to catch on Oahu.

I talked to Ladd about this last week at one of the fishing stores, but the conditions for GT shore popping have been quite poor for east Oahu this season.  It's been too windy and there have been too many south swells to fish the deep water.  So, I have been doing a lot of light gear whipping/plugging.

Today though, I had a small window of opportunity to get the heavier stuff out and ended up hooking up a nice omilu ulua which almost got eaten by a shark during the fight.  The GT ulua from shore on a popper still eludes me after about 2 years of getting into this, but today's catch was quite pleasing!

The omilu made only one short run and pulled a small amount of line.  The shorter boat rod I was using made it easier to stop the fish quickly.  I couldn't let it run much because of the rough and shallow terrain.  The tradeoff was that it was harder to pull the fish over shallow reef heads.  Also I was a little worried because I used a smaller leader than usual to increase casting distance in the windy conditions.  Luckily, the leader held up.

Gear: Yamaga Blanks Atlas GT 76/6, 2008 Stella 10000SW + SOM 16000 spool, Diamond 65 lb braid, 80 lb Big Game rub line with 150 lb bite leader, Hammerhead C-cup

NICE Omilu Ken!!!!  Don't worry bud there's a dozer GT out there just waiting for you to piss him off with your popper.

Awesome shot and nice Omilu Ken! Ladd mentioned to me the other day he met you. I have been using a boat rod (Race Point 200) casting from the shore every now and then this summer too. Nothing yet but it will be interesting when the fight comes  :). I think this summer might be a good one from the shore, my buddy has told me the Oama are piling up outside and hopefully sometime this summer they will move in along with everything else.

Howzit Trevor once I knock over a few good fish with it will let you know, so far very happy with it.

Thanks guys.

Yup hopefully this year really gets some good shore GT action.

I am actually going to try boat GT fishing for the first time next month when I visit family in Okinawa so I may get hooked and end up buying a boat... LOL.
