Stella SW 4000 Drag issue...
January 15, 2013, 03:33:40 PM
All,

Just a quick update regarding the SW 4000, I dont get too many to service but this is the 3rd 4000 I have seen where the top pressure washer is starting to deform due to the drag pressure. To me the top washer is too thin (not rigid enough) for the drag that it can apply.

This one is not as bad as the previous one I had which had deformed approx 40%...just something to keep an eye on...

Thanks for the heads up Clem. Have you serviced any 5000SW's? Seeing as the max drag is only 2kgs more I guess it could be in the same boat?

Cheers

Hi George,

The 5000 is fine...different setup, same body as the 4000 but larger rotor and spool...I prefer the 5000, also has a better line roller

Clem,

Just a thought. Are we asking too much from small reels?

Possibly Trevor, this particular reel is stock so should be able to handle the high end of its drag range without deforming the top washer...I think the manufacture would have to assume that some will push their equipment hard...this one was likely maxed out to cause the damage it did

From what I have seen it is only an issue in the 4000 and possibly only when the drag is at the highest end...

G'Day Clem

I have seen this problem before on a few different brands of reels too. I think no spinning reel is made to withstand some of the silly and crazy things fisherman think they can put a spinning reel through. There is no substitute for stupidity at times and the prime reason things like this happen to spinning reels is when a big fish is taking line under a high drag setting and the fisherman is trying to wind the handle at the same time as the fish is taking line from the reel. Some of us would call it neglect or bad technique. ::)

Cheers,
Rob

Clem, I never realised that about SW5000 and SW4000... just assumed they were essentially the same bar the size.  Have both Stella 5000 and Twinpower 5000 but never owned a 4000 spool.  Very good information to have and thank you.

As for Trevor's point,  I think a lot of us do that, especially with the higher end reels.  When I think of the fish I have caught with the Twinpower SW5000 especially and the stress I have put on that poor little reel, it is no wonder the gears completely failed a few months ago!

And i thought you were the complete tackle hog, the fact that you don't have a 4000 spool for either the Stella or the TP has left me feeling a little flat. ;)

Are 2013 4000s running the same set up??? Or have they changed it to fix this issue??
