Propper rigging for Heru lures
February 24, 2013, 08:51:35 PM
Hi all

I'm preparing my popping gear now for the red sea(targeting mostly GTs up to 25 kg trevallies and Bohar snappers); so I'll have many questions in the upcoming month
Currently I'm waiting for Smith GTK 77 to arrive

-I just got a Heru Wahoo 150gm, Nomad website says"Best rigged with 2 x owner SJ-41 11/0 hooks on the belly and an Owner 9/0 Jobu or 7/0 shout on the tail for casting" I'd love to know what are the suitable size Owner trebles for lure balance if I decide to go that way.

-Same question for Halco Roosta 125 gm?

-Any body recommends the Sebile splashers?

-Last question, I'm currently waiting for my tackle shop to get Cubers in more sizes/colors, will the 150gm be an overkill to work properly with the GTK 77, so I'd rather stick with the 125gm, and what will be the suitable size Owner trebles for both

Thanks alot
Mahmoud Salem

Mahmoud, on trebles for for the Wahoo150  - use Owner 5/0 middle and tail.

For the Roosta I have seen them used successfully with both 4/0 and 5/0 Owner-size trebles.

For Cuberas I usually use 5/0 on the 150 and 4/0 on the 125. The 125 will take 5/0s but  I think sits better with 4/0s.

Dear Mark, your recommendations are for ST66 I guess?

I've used the Roosta successfully with a pair of ST76 5/0's but found that the same hooks will sink the Sebile Splasher. I'll be experimenting with some different hooks on the Splasher prior to my next trip !

The Roosta might still float with ST76s on it but they really are not ideal. If you want to use the ST76, I'd suggest you go to the 4/0 or use ST66 5/0.

The 125 Cubera is generally fine with two ST66 5/0s. The 4/0s are good too.

There are no absolutes with hooks, Mahmoud. Assming a lure still is able to float with the hooks, what will happens is that the heavier hooks will keep the lure down a bit more but it may spend a bit of time sub-surface. The lighter hooks will see the lure rise and recover faster but it will also be easier to pull it out of the water. Your popping style also has quite an impact on this. That is why it is important to test the lures with different hook configurations to see what suits you. What may be perfect for another angler may not work for you at all.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

Yes Mahmoud I was meaning to ST66 all the way through. I should have made that clear.  I don't use ST76s at all.

Chris, Mark, Brandon thanks alot

For the Smith GTK77, should I go with 125 gm or the 150 gm Cubera?

You will have no problems with a Keyolhu working 150g Cuberas

Thanks for everyone
Just as an update, for now I couldn't find 4/0 or 5/0 ST66,
so for the Heru Wahoo I went with 2 x 4/0 ST76
for the Cubera 150 I went with 2 x 4/0 ST76
All other stickbaits (for BFT Tuna) like Dorado slider, Baby Runboh, I went with 2 x 3/0 ST66

Last but not least, I got a Smith Tokara 60 rod instead of the GTK77 Keyolhu, I like it very much, can't wait to put a bend on some fish
Will try to post some pics
