For the typical lure range you give, I would say Carpenter Discovery Journey 83MH, Endless Passion 82/38 and Coral Viper 79/40 would all work well for you.

Personally I would not buy any Blue Chaser as a GT rod as they were not really designed for GT fishing.

There are lots of other brand choices as well Guy. One I would suggest is worth looking at is Ripple Fisher GT82. My favourite RF rod, and one that fits your brief of typical lures used.

Hi guy,
I own 2 of the rods you've mentioned the blc83/40 and the fcl 81ext m. The blc is purely a stickbait rod it has a very soft tip that works stickbaits up to 160 (unrigged) but even 160 is pushing it casting wise and the rod saturates a bit too much to effectively pull larger lures through the water.
The fcl 81ext m is the stickbait version of the 81ext. It has a softer tip but a stronger butt section. The fcl would be my pick. It'll throw lures from 100-200g a mile, literally! Best casting rod I've used and will cover what you've mentioned.

Hi Guy

Marks comments are spot on.

Although I have multiple GT rods, all carpenters nowdays, if I had to use one to met the specs you desire it would be the EP82/38. Quite similar to the CV in lure casting ability just a bit longer to assist with casting. The EP might be a bit more suited to stickbaits then the CV but will still pop lures to 140g.

Some might say the EP pops lures like a seafrog 120 very nicely compared to a dedicated popping rod. As although the rod loads up and absorbs the weight of the lure more, when chugging it result in a slower but drawn out action thus prolonging the bubble trail and action, if you know what I mean..

The DJ83MH is a little heavier in weight and action and will probably suit better if you move more towards the heavier end of your lure specs, its also closer to pe8 then the other 2 rods which are more pe6-8 rods. And thus handles a little more drag.

All great rods, no easy answer

Thanks heaps for the info guys.

I'll process it and probably come back with more questions.

Hey Guy

I know it gets a bit confusing with all the model names and numbers but the EP82/38 is over 8 foot.   :-\.   Only 1 inch shorter then DJ83MH  ;)

The 81ext mh is the one I was talkin about sorry. The 81ext has a lower drag rating so a less powerful butt section but the tip is actually stiffer. Confusing I know!
The 81ext MH is definetly not a stiff rod by any means it loads very nicely and you can fish a heavy drag putting a lot of hurt on the fish but still hang on to it comfortably.
The blc83/40 I use for gts as well but only when there's smaller fish around. I wouldn't reccomend buyin one if its gonna be your only premium gt rod. The Tbl 83/32 would be more suited but I'd still buy the 81ext mh over any of the other rods for what you've specified.

I have the FCL 81 Ext MH and DJ 83 MH.
Honestly cant say one is better than the other.

The FCL is a brilliant rod for working stickbaits up to 160 grams unrigged. But for poppers nothing more and the El Toro/Cubera 125.
The DJ works bigger Stickbaits (200) and El toros up to 150.

The DJ is a heavier rod 425 grams vs 370. But a better rod to tangle big fish with. The DJ provides better flexibility in switching between SBs and Poppers but the SBs need to be bigger to enable the rod to work them.

As a pure SB rod for 140-160 lures I'll go with the FCL.

Hope this helps.

Guy, on the lengths just pay attention to the main number of any model. So 82 equals 8 foot 2 inches, 85 = 8 foot 5 inches etc. There are no Endless Passion rods less than 8 feet (at least none that I know of), so they are all relatively long GT rods.

My bad. Yep, one thing I have figured out is the numbering system. I actually wrote the wrong number down next to the endless passion in my notes.

What i am struggling to keep up with is the seemingly infinite combinations of hard vs soft vs "powerful" butts, tips etc and how it all packages together to get what I'm chasing.

Apart from my original request (ie I know this will probably be a separate rod) if I said I was planning to start making some trips to Bugatti Reef in my boat (it's only 15-20nm past where I usually go for table fish) what sort of artillery should I be thinking about taking out there to deal with the "average" fish I'll find there?

Again... thanks a lot for the help guys, it's awesome.

It's a bit daunting trying to decide what to drop the coin on without being able to touch or use one or all of them first.

Guy, I don't know much about fishing Bugatti other than what I have read in trip reports, but from everything you have said, either DJ83MH or EP82/38 would suit you well I think.

The FCL rods are clearly popular with those that use them, and I think you could go to Fishhead and handle one.  You might also find a Ripple Fisher GT82 there as well.

Yeah I could go to fish head & play with but that is 1100km away and logistically & financially a pain.

The nomad mother ship is often (& currently) moored in my home marina so I may even talk to the re: what they are carrying in the onboard stocks, but I'd be surprised if they carry the rods onboard...

Guy, Bugatti is like many other locations in that there are areas you could get away with PE6 but also areas where you would be outgunned on PE12. That said, much of the areas the is relatively forgiving by GT standards and what I used to recommend to our guys coming out for our annual trip was to compromise around PE8.

If you go and read my guide to GT rods, it should help you at least work out some direction on what you want to get. It will also remove some of the fallacies around so-called "stickbait" rods. You don't need a stickbait rod for the very large majority of stickbaits on the market. It is helpful though, if you do use surface stickbaits like the Carpenter Gammas or Hammerhead Cherry Boys although someone who really knows how to slide those lures could do it with a Patriot Design Fire Vortex. Those lures are sliders per se but the reality is most manufacturers don't really know how to create a lure with that surface sliding action.

I would ask though, is there a reason why the rod must be above 8 feet? The longer the rod, the more difficult it is to handle when you are hooked to a fish, especially when it is close to the boat. Sure, you get some casting advantage but you really need to balance that off against the disadvantages.

A lot of it comes down to how you like to fish as well. A Ripple Fisher Ultimo 79MH is a good PE8 rod but is built for sliding surface stickbaits. It will also manage smaller poppers in the 120g range if it need to. Conversely, a Carpenter Monster Hunter 80H can be used for PE8 but will be sifnificantly stronger and is a heavier rod. It will work signifintly bigger poppers and can cast a 200g stickbait comfortably. They're both suitable for PE8 but are like at opposite ends of the spectrum.

What I am trying to emphasise to you is that there is a big, big range of rods out there but how do you like to fish? If you are relatively new, it is going to take some time to work out what you like and there is going to be some changes in your rod selection. It is highly unlikely that you are going to get it perfectly right at the start. Also, your style and taste may evolve.

Personally, I think you'd be best off looking for something with more all round characteristics to start with. You could look at something like a Coral Viper or a Ripple 79R. If you prefer a bit more length, you could look for an EP82 or a Ripple 82LC. I personally would prefer the Ultimo 82H over the LC. They would both work similar lures. There are heaps of other brands you could consider too like Yamaga, Zenaq, FCL etc etc. best to work out your budget first and go from there.

The Odyssey doesn't carry rods for sale on board any more.

I agree with everything that Brandon has said.

I would say forget about getting something over 8 foot unless you really need the length for casting or you're after something more specialised. But it looks to me like you're after a bit of an all rounder and a location like Bugatti doesn't require massive casting distance most of the time. My suggestion would be something like the Coral Viper CV79, it is an exceptional rod that many forum members own. It cast's very well for it's length.
