Spool issues?

(1/2) > >>

Bill Maguire:
Evening guys.

I need some advice if you can help me out. I've just bought myself a new Shimano Saragosa 14000 which I intend to use in PNG later in the year.

My problem concerns the line lay on the spool. I have spooled the reel twice and both times have the same resulted in the same crappy line lay. To illustrate I have attached a pic and would appreciate if somebody has a clue as to why these "peaks and valleys" are happening.

Luke Wyrsta:
It's hard to tell from the photo the extent of the issue.

The two-speed osciallation system is probably responsible for this and isn't really a concern for all reels that feature the Propulsion Line Management System. It doesn't look the most uniform but does allow the line to leave the spool with much more flow. I would suggest that you actually try casting the line and perhaps retreiving with a heavy popper/plug.

Hopefully there are no problems.

I was casting a Saragosa all last week, and I believe it spooled up much the same. It now looks a lot more uniform after use. Was also casting the new Stella SW ;)

Bill Maguire:
Thanks Luke, I'll try a bit of casting and see what happens.

Try winding the line on with some tension on. Suggest trolling a bibbed minnow with all the line out and then winding it in at a continous pace. Should lessen the uneven line lay somewhat.
Did the reel come with any spare spacers to fit under the spool.
Sometimes experimenting with these seems to fix it. My Sphero 14000FB does not suffer from this and lays the line on beautifully. I do not know if the winding system is the same but I presume they both use the wormshaft drive so this problem should not be occuring with your Saragosa.
