Epic report as always, and kudos for the perseverance in less than ideal conditions..
Curious as to the use of a wire bite trace for GT, was this to protect your lure from the "razor gang" , or some type of experiment, looks fairly heavy gauge wire and would be interested to know the attachment method to the lure. Was a swivel involved , as the wire looks severely torqued towards the lure end.
Glad you got the gamma back, and thanks again for a great report.
Cheers
Rob

Rob,
That's the lures internal wire that has been completely pulled free from the lure body.

I'm very sorry the weather was so poor. I was watching the weather while you guys were on your trip. 20 homes were washed away on the island while you guys were there, but you guys made the best of the trip while you were able to get on the boats. It also looks like the shore fishing was great. That alone beats many places hands down.
The engine scare sounds a bit hair raising. I am glad it worked out well. I am really looking forward to my trip, but fishing alone means I don't have the added security of a second boat. I wonder if the sheik has a safety plan for single boats. 5 fishermen were lost last month and the locals were implementing plans to contend with losing boats. Did you hear anything about that while you were there?
Saltywater Tackle:
Thank you all for your kind words :)

Hi Brandon,
I was aware of the situation of the lost fisherman, the sheikh himself was lost for 7 days at sea in 1999, most of the good captain that i know in the island were lost at sea, it is a common things but nowadays they use a hand held GPS, I DON'T THING IT IS ENOUGH !
I suggest you to have a GPS on board along a satellite phone with a number that you can reach right away at the island,
part of the meeting with the Sheikh was to avoid running 1 boat at a time, many things could happen and this is my 3rd trip to Socotra in less than 1 year, honestly i wasn't expecting things like that to happen, Nick from Ocean Active was warning me for a long time to be prepared in case somethings like that arise in the future, now i take it more seriously and prepare for the worth ;)
good luck on your trip i am sure you are going to have a blast specially that you are open to the Musilm culture and you know what to expect.
Tight lines
Sami
Rob Paterson:
Hi Luke
I see that now, thanks for pointing out

Rob

Thanks for the input Sami. I'll be sure to bring a sat phone and my gps. I think your right. Bringing a gps isn't enough. What good does it do to know where you are if can't let someone know where that is?
I am open to the Muslim culture. I actually attended Eid services today just to become more familiar with it. A few of my students invited me and it was eye opening. Watching the goats get slaughtered wasn't something I'll forget for a while.
Again, good luck in Tanzania. I hope you get a nice doggie.
