Stickbait rod for PE6-8, advise needed
December 21, 2013, 06:27:06 PM
Hi All,

Looking to increase my arsenal now the bug has bitten, looking for a rod - not too long, for throwing stickbaits in the 90-120g range and the odd smaller popper like the Cubera 100. Matched to a Stella 18000 or 10000, not sure yet so advise on a reel is also helpful.
Still needs to have the power to handle my local GT's which can reach 30kg but the norm are around 20-25kg.
Looking at Ripple fisher or Carpenter but open to any other brands.

Cheers.

Jason,

From my experience I can recommend a couple of PE6 set ups. They're all +8 ft but manageable imho

Carpenter TBL 83/32 with a Stella 14000

Race Point 150 with either the 10,000 or the 14000

Don't overlook the Hots 83H either, it loads 100g stickbaits easily.

There's heaps of others.

Regards,

Trevor

Was hoping to stay under 8ft for ease of use around the boat. Maybe limiting my options though.

For under 8 foot, PE6-8 and those lure weights Jason, you could look at a couple of Ripple Fishers:

Ultimo 711ML
Ultimo 79MH

Xpedition Tackle in Singapore have both.

There are what seem to be suitable Carpenters under 8 feet but they are very hard if not impossible to find.

Hots fake Lex 7'11 MH is an option as well.

You could also throw the Temple Reef 78HH into the mix as well, fitted to a 10000SW.

Cheers,

Ian

How about the carpenter tbl711/35? Good luck on your search, some good recommendations...

How would the black hole Magic Eye 804s stack up compared to the above?
Great post!

The Carpenter TBL 83/32 should be on your shortlist.

I had the Temple Reef 78HH and although a lovely rod it was more of an allrounder and the tip a bit stiff for working lighter (70-110g) stickbaits that I wanted. I sold it as it was too close to my other allround popper/stickbait rod.

So ended up going with the Hots 711MH, lovely set up ideal for stickbaits (and fish) in that weight range. It worked 125g fine, and I think I also cast an Orion 140g on it. It's better matched to 10/14k size reel.

Cheers Dave

Yes, Hots 711MH as well, didn't mention that one.

Lighter than the 83H but very, very capable rod. I've seen +40kg GTs landed with it.

Trevor

Thanks all, have some homework ahead of me thanks to the huge response. Very appreciated.
Going to closer at the following three, going to be a tough choice.
Hots 711MH
Carpenter TBL711/35
Ripple fisher Ultimo 79MH

Regards,

Jason.

Jason

The TBL 711/35 is one of the sub-8 feet Carpenters I alluded to when I said they are almost impossible to get. I have not seen one of these for sale for long time.  If you can get one then from all I have heard it is a very good rod.

The other Carpenter I meant was CV79/35 (not the much more common CV 79/40).
