Finishing fishing knots and tests
April 06, 2014, 09:55:16 PM
or this one (nomad)
the crossings overlap on the skock leader and needle, BUT at the end, instead of the keys, I pass the free end of the braid in the eye of the needle and I pulled the needle to move the free end of the braid inside the knot.
I squeeze gently  ;) on the free end and the main line of the braid, then louder for that the knot snaps into place, then on the shock leader and the braid..
It gives a result that I love  ;D
About 12 crossings with the braid are needed for that the knot does not slip.
I have tested out with varivas SMP 120lb and 200lb fisherman,  I must pull on the braid as an ox to get the breaks Ah! Ah!

I love doing tests, long ago I had been testing the adjustment of the drag  of the reels and tests to measure the peak.
I found:
Drag set to X lb  at the ouput of the real when the rod is at the horizontal position

Sounds interesting! Think I will give it a go.

Do you pull the tag through all of the crossings?

Peter you're welcome here  :) finally one fisherman who is interested in my prose, congratulations Ah! Ah!  :)

You said "Do you pull the tag through all of the crossings" yes because all crossings of the braid cover nylon  and needle.

If i understand correctly, i think i have tried this before. Its making crossing like the start of making FG knot, but ends up with nail knot. I use small plastic pipe to do the nail knot.
But the result is not good. If you try static, just pulling, it will not sow its weakness.
It wii show up in the real popping condition. The leader completely disengaged from main line.
I have to ask the captain to fetch the popper+leader
Now im back to the original FG knot

David,
I'm not sure at all to make myself understood in English  :( but if the knot is tight with enough crossings, it does not slip at all, it is the finish that is different compared to the FG and it's not the keys of FG which made that this knot is strong.
In tests, I made perhaps a hundred knots until having a breakdown, the knot has not slipped once on the leader.
It's just my modest opinion

It is possible to finish a FG knot with a rizutto finish so you don't really see the end of the braid at all. I can't be bothered though!
If it swims; I want to catch it!

Hi, Sacco,

Maybe its a different thing, not the one i tried in the past. But incase of what ive tried, it is not strong enough. Nail knot slipped in my case.
I use this knot (nail knot) to finish/locking after make 6-12 crossings like the start of FG knot.
Its very neat, no excess braid shows at all. But unfortunately no good for long term popper throwing. Completely slipped after 10's-100's casts

it may be clearer with pictures, I hope so  :P

FG on shock and needle

The needle is withdrawn and before tightening knot

FG is tight, it's impossible drag on the shock

Very interesting, but doesn't the insertion of the braid into the criss crossing section of the knot reduce the chinese finger trap effect? After all, it is the criss cross section that should bite down into the leader and inserting the braid tag end in the knot could make it more prone to slip, or?!?

Excellent remark Jussi but the knot  never slips if approximately 12 crossings are made and of course if the knot  is tight enough  with the help of the thighs, the braid on one side and the leader of the other
I even made the Midknot  in the same way, but I much prefer the FG  :)

Hi, Sacco

It's different than what I tried in the past. The weakest point will be in the most left cross where the main line leaves the knot. In that point main line is held in place by a PE strand that leave to the right side. Usually when 2 PE lines fricted each other while tensioning full force of the pulling force, it will break there.
I don't know how to do it, but to get better knot, main line that is leaving the knot should be holding the leader, not another PE line. (Friction with leader, not with another PE line)

This is what I tried :
Make 6-12 crossings like the start of making FG knot
