Tackle set up for Southern Oman
January 27, 2015, 06:17:57 AM
Hi,

This is my first post, my name is James and I live in the UK.

Very new to GT fishing and have just booked my 2nd trip with No Boundaries Oman.

Had and Epic time with NB last year and absolutely fell in love with popping for GT's. I have done my share of fishing around the World but nothing prepared me for the moment a GT absolutely smashed my popper and brought the pain, instantly addicted!

Having been pretty clueless I learnt so much from that trip thanks two my awesome fishing partners Jed Dupe and Hesh El Brollosy.

Now I think I am much more prepared for this trip but would like the opinions of some seasoned fisho's. I have listed below the set ups I will be using and would appreciate anyone's input...

Popping set up:
Rod: Temple Reef Reefer 76-10
Reel: Shimano Saragosa 20000SW
Line: Power Pro Zero Impact 55Kg

Stickbait set up:
Rod: Daiwa GT86
Reel: Shimano Saragosa 20000SW
Line: Power Pro Zero Impact 55Kg

Lures:
Poppers: TR ballister Detonators 188g, Heru Cubera 180 and 150
Stickbaits: AWSB floating and sinking

What are your thought guys?

Cheers
J

Ha ha I was at Cribbs Causeway on Sunday!!  I live in Oxfordshire. There's a good few guys from UK who head to SO each year., we were there last April and we are back there in November.

I'm sure lots of guys on her can comment on your rods, reels certainly ok, never used that PP braid but others will have.

Are you not doing any jigging ?

It's good to hear there are a few GT fanatics in the UK.

I am taking a light tackle set up for the inshore action.

I don't have any jigging gear so I think I need to look into it.

Any recommendations for a light jigging rod and reel combo?

I went with a Tenryu Jig Zam (150g) with a Saltiga 4K for a medium set up. I did get smoked a few times so went with my heavier outfit RippleFisher Ocean Arrow (420g) which was a bit overkill for the size of fish ~20kg.

Hey James,

The light jigging combos we took last time were a mixture of Temple Reef Mytho models, one of the Jigging Master Fallings rods, a Jigging Master Evolution Titanium and a couple of Synits (but the Synits are not that light). Was really happy with the lineup, and will be taking my part of that quiver again in April.

If you are keen in meeting up in London some time and having a beer and checking a few rods out, drop me a line.

Cheers,

Dan

Cheers Dan,

I had a look at the mytho's on your site, they look really nice.

What about the Saber Game light jigging rods, have you used them?

I have checked out the sabre game's, very nice for the budget price. Almost bought one, but then went with a slightly heavier (and twice as expensive :D ) option, as I already have a rod that's only marginally lighter than the Sabre Game. I remember a couple of members on here use them, just can't remember who.
I hear very good things about the TR Mytho's from experienced fishermen, you can't go wrong with them I'm sure.

Thanks for the comments Felix, it seems the Saber Game could be a good option as I don't want to spend too much.

Dan I will reply to your email.

Cheers
James

One thing that might help with your decision - it's a slowish taper, bends pretty far into the butt section. I personally like that.
