Hots Gipang 711MH Smith GTK 80 SJX
May 27, 2015, 12:09:45 AM
Has anyone got any experience of this rod?

Looking at it for Med/Adriatic Bluefin, mainly 40-100lbs.

Lures run small, say 40-100g. Will probably run with JB Hollow 40 or 60 on a Stella 10000 SW.

Is this suitable, or fast action GT rod that is designed for bigger more powerful fish?

Other option is a Smith GTK 80 SJX which is designed for YFT but probably a good match to the fish I will encounter.

Best,

Oli

The Hots 711MH is pretty soft but won't handle 40g lures, more like 60/110g.

Don't know about the Smith

The Ripple Fisher Big Tuna 85F Japan Special is suitable for that lure range for PE3-6.

The Ripple Fisher Big Tuna 85 Limited is suitable for that lure range for PE6-12.

Both rods, as well as the correct selection from the Saltywater Tackle El Maestro range or the MC Works Seven Miles 825CR Tuna Special and 846CR are good choices too.

Thanks for the input guys, does anyone else have experience of the Smith GTK 80 SJX or Tide Lez 711MH?

Pushed the button on a Tide Lez 711MH... The Ocean Active Southern Oman report where they field tested the Hots range and landed a 52kg GT on the 711MH swung it.

Should be OK on Tuna to 100lbs!

Hello Oliver I regularly fish the waters of Ancona, middle Adriatic and here size of tuna varies widely from approximately 30 to 150 kg, although the fish that usually eat on spinning is about 45-50 kg ... personally I would recommend to fish heavy rods PE 6-8 minimum and braid 60lbs minimum to be ready perhaps to the challenge with a giant bft ... in fact i fish with PE 7 varivas 90 lb and 150 lb leader and enough high drag loads (12-13 kg) to bring alongside the fish in a short time To release it in good condition ... I am now looking for a pe 12 serious also because many of my friends use ripple fisher big tuna or carpenter blc 80/40 and 130 lbs braid ... keep in mind that here the spinning is mainly divided into two periods: March April May and September October and November ... in the spring bft prey mainly silicone lures and they eat stickbait and popper 80-100 gr too... while in autumn are more ferocious ... so best thing is use 60-90gr lures ...so go with hots and loads the Stella with 60 lb braided and leader 100-130 lbs

best regards
Alessio

P.S sorry for my english

Lovely advice Alessio! Thanks for your input. Yourself and other Italian members like Michele Meggiolaro and Allessandro Massari have a wealth of Tuna knowledge to share! Add that to Sami Ghandour, Jamie Triay and Yoshikazu Devantier!!

Hi Alessio,

Could you recommend 4-5 lures in the 50-100g range that you regularly use in the Med/Adriatic?

Thanks in advance for your input.
