Title: New Penn Popping Reel
Post by: Brandon Khoo on June 28, 2009, 07:01:43 PM
Check out the new reels from Penn to hit the market leter this year. I suppose it was only a matter of time before Penn released something at the premium end of the market. Still, at the prices they are going to be, I'll let someone try them!  :D

Yeah it seems to me it takes a while to really refine a reel model....and at US$700 for the large one you aren't exactly saving a fortune on the cost of a new Stella...

Will be interesting to see how it performs in the mid term....

That being said, a mate of mine got a 50kg YFT late last week off Sydney on a Penn Spinfisher 850

Scott, that penn 850ssm was howling line off  when the fin took it, and we were thinking he would get spooled at one point. But it did the job and held up very well.

I agree 100%... I'm partial to a bit of blinged up tackle, but sometimes it can go a little far....

if you go to the GT popping videos section above and check out the latest video posted there and read the discussion thread following the video, you can see what too much in-breeding leads to

They've edited the comments for some reason.. Shame I was looking forward to a laugh!

I had a read of some of the comments on the Bloodydecks site in the states after someone posted pics of some tunas caugh popping.. Comments suggesting he'd caught it on a conventional reel and then picked up the popping rod and stuck the lure in its mouth for the picture. It's like they live in a cave or something..

Dave - When it comes to the West Coast crew of the US, they certainly only believe in overheads.... Spinners are for catching bait, and even not particularly good for that according to them.... The East Coasters have a far better outlook on threadlines!

Almost line ball with a Stella on price, half the bearing count, less drag and looks like it's dressed in drag. Oh dear.

It is the Enterprise I am looking at?

In my never-ending quest to read old threads here (a noble venture), I found this one.  Very, very, very funny.

Did anyone ever manage to have a swing with one of these monstrosities?

Hahaha - saw some at a show in France in Feb - looked horrific!

I guess they are aimed at the east coast VS and ZB market ...

All I can say is..........shouldn't say anything negative unless you have used them first.  I use Stella's and Saltiga's but I will not pass judgment till the reels have been used.  I think the colors could grow on you.
