Just bought myself an 18000 SW for my fisrt poppering trip to Fiji, looking to spool it up with 120lb Boat Braid (Pe10). Reading the specs, it looks like the spool will only accommodate 230m or so of line, will this be enough for GT poppering, or would I need more line capacity?

hi thien
i have puted my varivas GT pe10 (130lb)line on the the SW18000 reel and i got about 275m on it .. you would get about that much of line to the 18000 .. if you put it on tight no problem .
hope this help,s ..

Hi Thien,
That capacity is acceptable but I do suspect you may get a bit more on than you think. A massive GT may test this capacity but such an encounter could be very rare.
Good luck.
-
Yeah and you would have no chance of landing a fish big enough to take that much line anyway T.
Did you get a 20000SW as well, or was the other one you bought for someone else?
I am getting desperate for this trip, suffering major withdrawals

Thanks guys. I was thinking that with a breakoff here or there and the consequent loss of line, and a cast of 60m or so, there won't be much line left to fight the fish on. I was going to put the line on a spare 20K spool, but wanted to use that to pack as much 70lb braid as I could for jigging Browns.
Scott, the 20K that came with the 18K was for Arman, I have two 20's already. He's been doing a few hours overtime every week, and hiding the extra money from the missus so he can buy the reel. ;D

haha good to see Arman is joining the spinning gear crew

Scott, he's on a mission. Now that he has a taste, he wants the 8000, 4000, and 2500 aswell. ;D
Spooled up 3 spools today, managed to put 280m of the pe10 onto the 18000 spool, 520m of pe6 (80lb Boat Braid) onto a 20000 spool, and 660m of pe5 (70lb Boat Braid) onto another 20000 spool. I'm rooted.... :P

I went within a whisker of being spooled on an 18000 spool with PE10 Varivas on it a few months back. I think I had about twenty to thirty metres left on the spool at one stage. Say you have a cast 80m away. A decent NC GT can easily take 100m in a single run. Another short run leaves you with very little to play with.
Still, locations like NC where fish will run so far are quite rare. If you're fishing most locations with Nomad, you'll be dead long before then.
In terms of snap offs, it really only becomes a problem if you have a snap off at the spool. If this happens, that spool is buggered. The other thing that can use up a lot of line is if you tie those huge bimimi loops for your twisted leaders by using your knees to spread the loop. If you do this currently, learn to tie a small bimimi loop with your finger.

Line cap? what line cap??
Just dead-lock them reels! :P :P :P

You mean No Line Out ?
Jon . :o

I tried that - unfortunately, I haven't quite figured out how to initiate no line out when the only result I seem to get is either PE10 breaking or line going out of the spool no matter how hard I hold onto it. I suppose I could try PE12 but I reckon that is likely to see me water skiing. :(
-
Hi Brandon ,
That is exactly what Kenji-san said when using PE12 with WV80XH in 2004 , " either the fish follow me or I go for a swim " .
Jon .
-
Brandon just go PE12, looks like i am going to have to do it, so why don't you join me?
-
Hi Brock - probably for the simple reason that you could probably hold on to it whereas I can't!! :D
I know, I've tried. I can tell you that the principle of "no line out" is simply a fantasy, at least in my case.

I am with you Brandon , sold my SP710H SHP already and before that my WV80XH , nowaday SP80M is just as heavy as I would want to red line . Regarding No Line Out , it's the term used by Grouper Boy when they were fishing in Komodo , those guys are getting older now n wiser not to indulge in such technique anymore nowaday , including Kenji himself .

Morning guys,
I guess I always like to think I'm giving myself the best chance of dealing with the monster when it comes along...so I have been running heavy braid and a big drag. So far I haven't been bust off by a GT on this heavy gear.
Problem is that you just seem to find the next weakest link in the chain....for me this has been the rod...I've bust two very heavy rods now! I guess I'm learning the expensive way that its not just brute force, rather a thoughtful application of big pressure at the right time for the conditions at hand.
Tight lines (not too tight though ;D )
Dave
PS - Anyone got a handle section for a WV80XH ?

PS - Anyone got a handle section for a WV80XH ?
Check with Ocean Active boys , they are known to have broken a couple WV80XH . What happened to your handle ?
Jon .
-
Hi Jon,
Tip section tore out through the handle when setting the hooks on a fish 50m away.
I'm pretty careful that tip sections are very well inside the butts and I do use wax on tip section joint....
Thanks for the tip - I'll drop Nick a line.
Cheers Dave

Hey Dave what's happened to the rod?!?! :o :o :o :o
Sounds like you saw bigger geets than us, got loads but none I'm prepared to post pics of..
