Shimano waxwing these lures look cool anybody tried using them from a boat or shore.
Looking for some lures apart from poppers for a forthcoming trip to Aitutaki.
-
I think Waxwings are tiny casting jigs (effectively, spoons)? I am not sure a GT Tackle forum is the most productive place to be asking about them..... I suspect even a small GT would break one in half :).
-
One of our members here Sam Owen was casting them around on light tackle when we were at Bugatti. They have a great action and kept getting hit but they seem to struggle to hook up because they only have one hook on the tail.
We called them the Anna Kournikova lure because they looked really flash but simply never came up with the goods! ;D
Even the biggest size isn't quite GT sized though

;D ;D ;D LMAO, thats very good.

That's just too good Brandon!
And I can think of a few more in that category :).

we better not get started on that otherwise we might get sued by some producers!! ;D

Sam prefers the BONG-A-JERK....!!!
Bigger profile with loads of flash.

Yo mean bastards told Chris that he was shaped like a Bonga-Jerk!!

Some of my friends in Lebanon are using them for the Bluefin tuna and they had a great success with the waxwing!
they landed many fish this year, the biggest estimated 60kg.
the lure has a very nice action and i have no doubt that GT's will hit them, the problem is the hooks and the body of the lure,
the following Picture belong to Nicolas Nini from Lebanon (14 years old),he hooked the fish on a Carpenter Black current rod using the Shimano waxwing lure

You think GTs would routinely hit something that small Sami?
-
they come in bigger sizes than that, Mark.
-
You can import larger sizes from America than we get hre in Aus.
If anyone is intereted drop me a PM and ill tell you where to get them.
Chris
-
Mark, For example I landed 20 odd kg fish on the small shibuki and Jon the same on a similar sized prototype lure in Sumba. The termianls were not in good shape at all after that though :)

I have no doubt Mark,
the boys from Ocean Active target GT's with small lures out of Musandam and they have great success, off-course when it comes in to a bigger fish you better off with a bigger lure for many reason but that doesn't mean bigger fish won't take small lure :)
-
Thanks guys :).
I had only seen the 9cm waxwings but I see there is a 12 cm as well. Still very small and I would be worried about a GT swallowing it.
-
I don't believe it - our most popular thread today is this one - discussing the Waxwing! Is someone going to make a GT sized one, lol?
-
Yep, that is funny ;) .
It is Saturday after all.
As a diversion, we could start new discussions:
"The things we waste most money on"
or
"Expensive GT lures that are really rubbish".
:)

I used a smaller sized one of these on Sunday chasing Northern blues, they need to be worked fairly slow and to be honest I don't think we will be be buying any more. They really only have the action of a glorified spoon or slice type lure except that they can't be worked fast enough to get reaction strikes. I used it for 20 odd casts for nil result. Probably better suited to Barra.... I have no doubt they will catch fish but I think there are far better (and cheaper!) lures for the applications it is aimed at. I think it may be a productive lure on Mooching Tuna but time will tell.
-
Sam Owen had that lure dancing at Bugatti and he got heaps of strikes on it. I'm not quite sure how he was working it but boy, it sure attracted the fish. I think he did manage to nail a longtail on one as well.

I could give it a go, I don't pour lead but could use wood ???
I have some old lure blanks lying around I could "Frankenstein" one and see what happens... How big Brandon? I have a 265mm long blank which I drilled a swivel hole in the wrong place ::) that I could use...
-
Sam, the problem with the Waxwing is that it's design is such that it works with just one hook point. For a stickbait for a GT, you need two hook points. Also, those characteristic wings would likely get destroyed by a GT. You need to get enough weight into it for it to sink. I personally think that a moulded lure would work better for something like this.
-
Agreed, I also think a resin bait would be the "go" type of method...
I wouldn't use flimsy plastic wings that are designed to break ;) I was thinking a metal similar to what you would use for a bibbed/lipped swimmer. I have multiple species of timber to use, you could easily make a sinking bait for this application..
Seems a lot of work and rather weird, but I am intrigued by what could be... I will make a small prototype ( Will this see me in court? I don't want to take on Shimano ??? ) ;D
-
Just make sure it is not a replica!!
-
I wonder what would happen if you cut the wing out?

You would have a fancy sinker...
The wing/s give it the action and stop the jig from rolling out (spinning) on the retrieve.
