Title: Smashed popper thread.
Post by: Mat Selwyn on April 25, 2008, 11:42:26 AM
Hi guys,
I've seen some pics on this site of absolutely destroyed poppers and stickbaits and am having trouble finding them. I was hoping that if you guys have some pics of messed up lures, long lifed old favorites, that you could post up here it would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a couple I've posted up before.  Wooden lures don't last long on GT's, but they work well

another, ripped the guts out of a Carpenter stickbait, and it had only caught three fish!

haha, where are my manners.. I feel for you guys, I really do.  The blue and silver stickbait in the first pic caught about 20 GT's before I lost it.  Wish I got a pic of it when it was really stuffed - unrecognizable!.  I ended up using it more of a joke than anything but it kept getting hit.

No G's up here for a while though - bloody wind!!  Here's a clip of what I've been doing lately - sacralicious!!

Sorry, this is a smashed popper thread, but, going over the picture, I still don't understand how the tip of the treble (bottom right) snapped off!

Thanks for sharing the pics guys. love em.
I've been preparing a popper for this thread but busted the thing off on a cast the other night! Just when it was looking the goods! I'll find a pic of it half way through it's life and post it up.

Another, again not smashed but rendered unusable unless i redo the thru wire!
100g wahoo stickbait doesnt really have the strength against a 40kg+ GT.
Note the tow point eye has pulled thru, both belly swivel and tail swivel are stretched, one of the belly hooks a sj51 9/0 bent and the rear wire loop stretched right out.
Oh and that was the only fish caught on the lure!! I literally put it on caught the fish and took it off! :D

Warwick, a man of your ability should be able to fix that, no worries mate! I'd just cut the back eyelet off, pull the rest of the wire out from the front with pliers, and re-wire. Might even be able to re-use the small lead bits at the front and back too.

Yeah I am thinking about it Angus, I had actually taken spare wire with me on the trip for cases like this. I might just hang it up on the wall of fame ;) I have plenty more lures to put in its place :D
:D I took 30 lures on the trip, used max 10 and lost 3. 1 bust off, 1 snip off (spano) and one to shallow reef.

Nathan is that a timber wolf?

GT's like the taste of them. It was my top producer on my first popping trip in April (Andaman islands). My Owner 4X trebles aren't on there anymore cause they got straightened.

Not from a fish. Hit the rocks once and snapped. Just shows how crap they are.

It's just a cheap Gillies I think, a mate gave it to me when he came up fishing. I have been using it for about 9 months but it is very soft. I think it has become more brittle sitting in my tackle box in the sun for days on ledges. Only caught a few GTs on it but spannies love it, I've never had them hit a lure so hard so consistently, they nearly rip the rod out of my hands every time.

Yeah, still throwing it around Pete, I do love working stickbaits through the water, esp after chucking poppers for a while. It's a good break.

Love that big faced popper up on the right in that group Jeenraj, looks like it's had a thourough chomping :o

Here's a couple of chewed Carps.  I think I've identified a weak spot. They all still work though!
