Varivas line markings
May 03, 2009, 01:21:55 PM
Just a quick one, can somebody please let me know at what interval lengths the red/blue markings on Varivas GT Avani are? I'm sure it says it on the pack, but I cant read Japanese.

Thanks Brandon... I wasn't sure if it was 20m or 25m.
BTW - acccording to the line markings, I just put 275m of PE10 on a 18k Stella and I made sure it wasn't over-spooled... does this sound about right?

that's a lot of line to get onto an 18000HG. Shimano specifications states about 240m.

you guys are obviously able to wind it on tighter than I can. I think I'm getting around 230 to 240m max.

I wouldn't say it was overly tight, but going by the 25m markings, I definately got 275m on.
Do you guys tie the braid straight to the spool... or do you add mono or tape for grip?

I use a bit of tape for grip, did you tie straight onto the spool?

It's advisable not to fill the PE line full to the brim of the spool's lip lest it causes wind knot upon casting , in anycase I stop at around 2~3mm from the spool's lip .

Jay - I just use a single wrap of Shimano tape the reel came with and found the braid bites in well.

Jon - You beat me to my next question... my reel is the new SW 18K, with the "bevelled spool lip". I've spolled it just past where the bevel strats, but the line is still inside the spools outer lip by a few mm's... is that about right, or is it slightly over spooled?

In regards to tension on the line while filling the spool... I try to keep it @ 5-6kg of drag pressure and find that it does pack it on fairly tight. I have gone as high as 8-10kg, but damn that is hard work! :P

Rob, you've gone beyond the point I got to. I spool mine to the point where the bevel starts but not beyond.

Sounds about where I spooled mine to. Never had any problems with wind knots.

Brandon - that would partly explain why I got a little more line on the reel.

Jay - good to hear... if it does become a problem, it's not a huge deal to trim a bit off to avaid wind-knots

Yes, advisable not to spool onto the bevel  ;D
