Some very nice fish there - the bottom one looks pretty big to me.  The size of the guys fingers on the top of the fish might be the best indication of relative size.

I think regardless of the deception of the lense, these guys know how to fish, and create they're own "luck" with skills learned from time on the water....great fish and good luck to them.

that is a bit of an understatement in the case of Fukui who is one of the pioneers of the sport and is regarded as the best captain/guide in the Tokara region.

As an interesting experiment to do at home...while you're sitting at the computer now hold your arms out parallel to your knees as if you're holding a small fish out to the camera to make it look bigger (I know you know what i'm talking about  ).  Your wrists are in line with the end of your thighs...right where these big Gees are sitting on these anglers.  Now lean away from the fish (as per photos 3, 5 and 7) to create even further distance between the object of known size (person) and unknown size (fish) and take the photo from a low angle to hide any aspect of the known object size that will allow depth perception (persons seated body).  The overall effect is the same as standing there and holding a 40kg GT out at arms length towards the camera...except try and do that when you've just reeled the bugger in    The wide angle lense then just helps to emphasise the effect further.

New Cal does look good and I'm tempted big time to do a trip there one day. Camera angles aside, it's the place i would go if i wanted to target a world record although i understand the record is in Japan. It certainly looks as though New Cal can produce fish of epic proportions, but am i right in thinking the wind factor can cut your days down?

Wind can be both your best and worst friend here mate. NC averages over 80% of days with wind at least 10-15 knots each year - damn windy place.

Wind really does encourage GT activity in this area, however once you reach over 25 knots it can become difficult to fish places especially on the great barrier.

10-15 knots SE, overcast and some swell/chop and you could be in for a monster session

Yes mate both can be done. I've fished bones there several times now so let me know if you want to do that - will sort you out
