Cape Cod with our Japanese Guests!
October 12, 2010, 03:47:10 PM
I finally had the pleasure to fish alongside Carpenter’s president Konishi-san, Mogi-san, Beerman Okubo-san, Ajichi-san and Hiro-san,
This is not the first time that Mogi-san and his group fished Cape Cod,
In the past year Mogi-san and his group visited the US on 3 occasion,
They came all the way from Japan to have a shot at our Atlantic Blue fin tuna, we had to charter 2 boats for the group and the arrangements had all been made long ago,
I had Capt Dom of Coastal charters sportfishing and Capt Eric of Livewell charters teaming up for this group,
The guys have been sitting at the dock and waiting for the wind to die down for the past 2 days.
We took our shot yesterday and made it with very rough condition to have one hook up by Ajichi-san, unfortunately Ajichi-san lost the fish yesterday at the boat side,
so we called it off at around 10:00AM. The decision was right as the sea condition was really bad,
as the condition got better today in the morning we had multiple shots at the smaller fishes,
I came in tight first, landed and released a nice 50 inch fish,
We then started seeing birds working and Capt Dom put us in a great position with 3 lures being launched at the same time
3 anglers came in tight at once, it was the best feed of the day and some of the best shots in a long time and we made it happen,
Beerman Okubo-san came in tight first, follow by me and then Konishi-san!
We landed all 3 fish and released 1 and kept 1 over and 1 under,
the biggest was 58 1/2 while the other slob was 43 inch,
We had a great time on the water and we will be back at it tomorrow morning,
It was great to see Capt Josh on the water and to see my friend Raymond getting hooked up on his first Bluefin tuna on topwater.
I would like to thank Capt Dom and Capt Eric for their joint effort they put on the water today.
To summarize it, it wasn't bad at all to go 4 for 4!

Sami great results, report an pics there, a lot of combined fishing experience on that trip.

What size treble are you using on those lures? and what pound leader would you be using for 40 to 100 kg sized tuna, and would you use something a bit harder than fisherman stealth leader??

Keep reports coming.

Thanks
A

Hi Andy,
thank you for the kind words,
Tosa-san, the maker of the Motoukenmaru lures recommend  ST66 3/0 but i personally prefer 4/0 for better hook up rate and avoiding swallowed lure, as for leader i suggest Fluorocarbon leader of 150lb, i am using the Yozuri H.D Carbon Leader and i am very happy with it,
once the temperature start dropping the feeding will become very common and i am sure you will see more report coming from our side  ;)

Sami,
Congratulations! With 150 lb fluoro carbon leader I can imagine the need to crimp the leader, but from what I can see in the photos the leader is just tied ... to a solid ring then a split ring. Are those knots often difficult to form correctly?
Cheers ,
Matt

Hi Matt,
you really don't need to crimp if you wet the line before you tie it, i normally get away with Fluoro up to 180lb,
if you wet the line and pull with a pressure at the side of the solid ring you will have a perfect knot.

I would agree with Sami there and do not find any issues tying a Uni (for example) with well lubricated 150lb fluoro. Try tightening with pliers if you are having problems.

Hi Sami,

Thanks for your replies.

Do you have any issues with friction knots from main line to your Fluro leader? or are you doing it another way?

Cheers
Andy

Sami - Another epic trip as usual from you guys, of course we've all come to expect nothing less!!

Bro can you maybe let me know a little about your leader set up? I've been noticing you run a different set up to most over in CC, and I've seen you mention your system briefly in a few posts, but never seen you comment on the full set up.... any chance you might be keen to share your set up with us, perhaps with a few pics even? :)

Cheers Bruddha,

Dre
