Hey All,

Would appreciate any feedback and advice regarding these two models. Matched with Stella 18k, which rod would be more ideal to work with when fighting fish and working lures. Im assuming the WV in nature may have a little further casting ability due to it being a few inches longer. Although both rods are rated PE 8 -12 it appears the WV is a much thicker and heavier blank and the RF seems more crisp.
Any advice would be appreciated.

they're different rods Luke.

Th WV80XH is a legendary stick and has been around for quite a number of years. I think if I was summing up these two rods, I'd say the WV is longer, has a slower action and has awesome power down low. It loads a fair bit easier than most people expect but is really powerful in the lower part of the blank. The 79H has a faster action and a stiffer tip than the WV and while powerful, would not have the same power down low which the WV has. I'd also say the WV can actually fish PE12 whereas the 79H is more a PE10 rod to me.

In terms of which rod would be more ideal for working lures and fighting a fish, I don't think anyone can give you a definitive response to this. It depends on the lure and the individual. What I can say is that the 79H would be more suitable for a big chugger than then WV.

I would not necessarily assume that the longer WV will cast further. It depends on the lure and how you load the rod.

Do you need such a powerful rod?!

Its easy to solve the problem  The way the Dollars going buy both sell the one you find not to your liking ,As Brendon has said it almost impossible to give advise or recommend a rod that suits all .

Hi guys

I'm considering to buy a RF Final Spirit 79H for a trip with LPB in New Caledonia. Can anyone tell me your opinion on these questions:

1) As far as I've found out through the www, the upper popper limit is about 200 grams. What is the lower limit? It says 170 grams on the rod, but will it cast 150 gram poppers in your opinion?

2) Do you think I will kill myself using only this rod with a Stella 18000 and poppers from it's lower limit up to 200 grams?

3) If I should only buy one rod - is there another rod that is more suitable for the task in New Cal?
Thanks in advance  :)

Peter

Peter, it is very difficult giving advice like this when we know nothing about your build, your experience on GTPopping, your fishing ability etc. What I can say is that the 79H Final Spirit is a heavy GT rod. It's a solid PE10 popping rod and is made for casting and retrieving big poppers. The rod will cast a 150g popper with hooks fine. It will also cast a heavier popper than 200g but that is the manufacturer's recommendations on the blank.

Using one of these for five days is hard work, particualrly if you intend casting lures in that range for the whole time. I'm not sure if you will kill yourself but you are going to feel very, very weary at the end of each day.

Hi Brandon
Thank you for your answer. I'm sorry about the lack of information :)

I am totally new in GT-popping. Have never popped before. Therefore I am very pleased to have the opportunity to catch some knowledge from you experts :)

My height is 1,80 m - weight 75 kg - 30 years old and pretty fit - workout 5-6 times a week.

Thanks again!
Peter

It comes down to what type of lures you want to use, Peter. if you want to use big poppers, then unfortunately, you need a rod that can pop them. Pease don't get the impression though that NC is nothing but super heavy tackle with monster poppers. Of course, you can fish that if you want but you will find a lighter outfit much easier to fish for long periods of time.

You sound in pretty damn good shape - makes me jealous! That said, your first trip and particularly your first experience in working big lures is going to be exhausting. Also, with really big poppers, there is no point using them unless you can really utilsie the big cup. I have seen quite a number of people in the past casting huge poppers like I Cups but generating a smaller chug than I can get with a mid-sized popper.

I only use the really big poppers sparingly. I leave the long periods of working monster poppers these days to the fit young blokes like Luke. If this was my first trip to NC and my first popping trip overall, I would look for a rod that could fish both poppers and stickbaits, is at that transtion point between PE8-10 and would focus on mid-weight lures in that 150g category. I would then have two spools for my reel - one with PE8 and one with PE10.

I'd suggest you look at something like a Ripple 79R or a Carpenter Monster Hunter MH80H.

hey peter

i dont know if this will help but i am also very new to gt popping and just got back from fiji from my first 6 day popping trip and as it was my first trip i had to buy a rod too so i purchase a ripple fisher GT79 reversal and i loved it for a first rod worked 150 gram poppers  very well and it is a very forgiveing fighting rod not that i tryed many others but seemed easy to fight on and great for stick baits too its rated to PE10 and lure waits are rated to 120g to 160grams and i also chucked a 180 gram popper on it also and seemed to work fine i didnt catch BIG fish the biggest were around 20kg
so if ur looking for a easy first rod i recommend GT79
dont kniow if that helps as there are alot better people to answere the questions on here then me

Thanks Brandon and Mark

@Brandon: I got the tackle list from LPB. The lightest popper is around 160 grams - the majority is around 170 - 230 grams. That said, I also read about you and Malcolm Cranes succes with the lighter gear in New Caledonia.

So what it comes down to is: Go try some different rods/chuggers. And that is what I intend to do :)
I have researched the GT79R and Dan Wulf recommended this for me too as a first popper rod. As we both live in Copenhagen, Denmark, he was so kind to invite me to a casting/popping session with some of his other GT-friends. So there I will get to to try some different setups.

@ Mark: Information like that is useful! Thank you.

Best regards,
Peter

Peter, For NC, I carry poppers ranging from 130g to about 220g and stickbaits from about 140g to 260g. What is important with poppers is your ability to chug them effectively. The biggest popper I use is a Fullscale King Kong. Fifteen minutes with this and I feel like passing out! I can assure you that if can chug a 150g popper well, you will catch fish with it.
