Best popping/chugging rod for big lures
April 02, 2011, 12:38:33 PM
I read brandon Khoo's guide to buying a GT rod. It seems the SP78UHL, PD fire vortex, and ripple fisher rod Brandon mention are the rods for big poppers that can fish PE-12.  Any update or other rods that would compare to those and if you own these rods which is the better one.

Marnie,

I think for this range of rods, it mostly comes down to which rod you can handle!

The best popping/chugging rod may well be the worst fish-fighting and lure-casting rod  :o

Marnie, I think it would be unfortunate if you're starting in this sport and you've been given the impression that the best approach is to head to the extreme end in terms of the gear. Working huge poppers is not something 99% of people can or want to do all day. It's physically exhausting and unless you can actually utilise that big cup properly, you're better off with a smaller popper you can work properly and a rod that suits accordingly.

There are no new entrants in the market at the most extreme end. The UHL isn't available new, the Fisherman 77 R10 isn't even on the Fisherman list of rods any more so you're really looking at the Fire Vortex or Ripple 78XH if you're masochistic. In this group, there is no better rod per se. Its very much a matter of personal taste.

PE12 is pointless unless you can fish it effectively. It casts like a dog.

We had a member a couple of years back who was obsessed with PE12, a broomstick and the biggest poppers anyone here wanted to suggest. Notwithstanding the advice of a number of members, he ended up buying a Ripple 78XH. We never really heard back from him after he bought his outfit so I don't know if the last anyone saw of him was him water skiing of into the sunset.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

well, the guy weighted about 70kg and originally wanted a Fire Vortex. he was then inquiring about the biggest poppers known to man! Mind you, he thanked everyone else for their recommendations except yours truly when I suggested the only lure for him was the Orion Big Jim LPB Special  :o  ::)

I been doing at lot of research but can't decide what GT rod to buy. I know I'm looking for a popping and not a stickbait rod. I want to fish at least PE-10. Any suggestion on what rod to get.

If you want a PE10 popping rod for medium/large and large poppers Marnie, then there is a lot more choice out there than there is for the really extreme PE12 rods.

Carpenter's newish Monster Hunter 80H has been received very well, and you could also look at the long established and heavier Wild Violence 80XH.

I have 2 friends who fish regularly with a Ripple Fisher Final Spirit 79H and really like the rod.  I have cast with it and it is a light rod given the power it undoubtedly packs.

Smith's legendary Komodo Dragon is a fine popping rod and I have fished mine with PE8 and more often with PE10. The only caveat I would give is that it is relatively short and is not a great casting rod.

Smith's latest entry into the heavy end is the 7ft 7" WRC Rocket and this is is rated as a PE10-12 rod. I have been searching for reviews on this rod but can't find any.

Those are just a few ideas and I am sure others will have more.

What you should be sure of is that you are physically capable of handling this class of rod. For a first popping rod, it is often wiser to look at the next weight class down - i.e. a PE8 or 8-10 rod.  These are still very powerful rods.

Some good suggestions there from Mark.

Would also like to suggest the Carpenter Monster Hunter 79XH. Should be regarded as a serious PE10 rod but a lot less brutal and more manageable than the truly serious PE12 sticks.

Marnie, I think the Carpenter SP78 EXH also fits the bill in the PE 10 category. No idea where you might get one from though. I'd vouch for the Wild Violence as Mark says - but it does take its toll after a few days of non stop use. Both can be fished with PE 8.

i just acquire the mh80h,i find it better for large swimbaits 200g gammas and can effectively chug smaller chuggers not big cup 200g chuggers,mh is like a heavier version of the tbl very nice and light to use...sp exh still the best  choice for chugging for me .
