Stuff they ought to make for us
November 29, 2011, 10:06:51 AM
Which new GT popping products would you like to see on the market?

Here is my list:

1) A Craft Bait GT3 in 220 grams: A Smith Baby Runboh except not a baby: No explanation needed. This lure is just a fish magnet - give us one exactly the same, except huge! :)

3) An expandable leader dispenser: If you are bringing gear for heavy popping, jigging and light spin, all those leader spools gets a bit annoying. I wish for a lightweight and compact dispenser solution where you can change number of spools as required.

4) A rod case with room for other stuff than rods:A huge rubber mesh landing net:

Lovely idea for a thread Lars.

6. A two speed spinning reel. A Frankenstein of a Saltiga Dogfight for working the lure and then you change gear to  a Stella 20000 once you have a hook up.

7. Along the lines of the Baby Runboh point - a Shimano Ocea Pencil bigger than 110 grams. Fantastic lures but who wants to fish for GTs with size 3/0 hooks?  Make a grown-up size.

I'd like to see more affordable gear that the masses can afford. This would allow more anglers from the lower income group to enjoy the sport.

Also, it would be nice if someone created a 'transformer' plug which you can take apart and reconfigure into a chugger, pencil or swimbait. Maybe a plug that breaks into two parts and you use the same weighted tail section with different front sections for varying conditions. This way you can choose from different tail weights, color combinations too.

Smith used to make a big Runboh but they wanted a minimum order of 300 lures to do another run of them. Fantastic lure but boy, it was a bit fragile. The wood it was made from was really soft.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

Mark,

Go look at the new Fox International 2 speed spinning reel ! it might not quite be up there size wise, but your dream is pretty close to already here. heres the blurb from the website.

"Stratos 20000 TS
Introducing the new Stratos 20000 TS Twin Speed Spinning Reel. The first reel of its kind to be specifically designed for high speed jigging in deep water. The unique gearbox of the 20000 TS allows you to change seamlessly, with the flick of a switch, from a high 6.1 to 1 ratio, to a low 2 to 1 ratio to cope with the demands of high speed jigging.

At 6.1:1 the retrieve speed is perfect for working large deep water jigs to induce the best action and increase the strike ratio. Once you have hooked up on a large Amberjack or GT you can then reduce the retrieve ratio to 2:1 to help you crank your specimen up from the depths. We have all suffered from dreaded lock up on fast retrieve reels and the stalemate situation that then follows; this reel makes that a thing of the past!

Our two speed gear box has taken three years to perfect and is protected by a worldwide patent. The high torque gearbox runs on stainless steel gears for maximum strength and is supported by 16 top quality stainless steel bearings.

The FOX CDT drag system is not only smooth but also immensely powerful and may be adjusted to a maximum of 40 lb of pressure thanks to the CCD configuration. The inertia start up is absolutely minimal ensuring an ultra smooth operation. The drag itself is fabricated from high quality carbon lubricated with our own special oil. The design of the system has resulted from thousands of hours of testing in a vast range of temperature and climatic conditions. Once you have set your drag the spool safety lock (SSL) system ensures that it does not back off or tighten during a long battle with a heavy fish. The ultra-strong body is made from top quality machined aluminum for lightness and integral strength.
The ultra-strong body is made from top quality machined aluminum for lightness and integral strength. All body parts have also been specially treated to ensure a high corrosive resistance.

The line capacity is enormous allowing you to use in excess of 350 yards of 50 lb braided line. As well as being ultra-strong this is a stunning looking piece of kit and comes in at just under 40 oz in weight.

The Stratos 20000 TS will allow you to get the utmost out of high speed jigging as well as similar big fish disciplines that require speed, strength and cranking power."

it has a 35lb drag rating which just squeaks in.

There is a large amount of budget gear out there already - look at offerings from the likes of Lemax, Pioneer, Maguro, Exori, Okuma etc. It is not very good (!) but there is budget gear designed for GT fishing.

After two mates both had rod tubes lost by airlines i am going to throw a reasonable travel GT rod out there.

Any chance Ripple or Carpenter could look at say a 3 piece 7ft 6 inch PE 10 rod? or does one exist, in the pipeline? Something that can be handcarried on board easily?

Yet again Fox appear to have come up with something rated between PE 5-8, which i am looking at, but a 5 piece GT rods seems a stretch to me although the specs are good (19lbs drag at 90 degrees and rated to cast 200g). Not a monster fish rod or a staple but something to fish PE 8 with in the event of disaster, now if it was a Ripple or Carpenter it could be a staple.

Something to make tyeing the friction knots easier. Due to bad joints in my fingers I cannot get the hang of the friction knots.

Dave Irvine of environet fame gave me a cradle for large fish light weight and inexpensive .His brother still manufactures out of coffs harbour he could makem to measure.Weve had huge cobia goldens gts and monster barra in it .The fish remains calm and I see no reason why tuna and gts of large proportions would not be comfortable in them Love this thread

Ben,

I was the same re the FG knot, then someone showed me the Shout Bobbin and its been full steam ahead ever since. Not cheap, but perfect knots under tension every time. I'm not quick with it but have retied on small boats easily enough. A few other brands out there but i can recommend the Shout version.

I heard rumours of a 3 piece Yamaga Blanks GT rod in development.

And Shimano make some of Carynx Kaibutsu range in several sections..... up to FIVE!  See http://fish.shimano.com.sg/publish/content/global_fish/en/sg/index/products/rods/saltwater/Caranx_Kaibutsu_S_T_C___Shimano_Travel_Concept__.html

Mark,

I'd forgotten about the Caranx travel rods as well. I reckon i'd trust the Fox brand better myself. I could just be paranoid after one bad experience, perhaps the money should go on another Carpenter .....  :)

I notice mention of slings/weigh bags - yet again search through the EU carp pike and catfish scene - there are nets and slings etc of ENORMOUS proportions available.

How about a Popper launching Canon!

Something that looks like one of those Japanese whale harpoons that you can load a 200 gram big mouth into and will fire it over the horizon (could get away with just a jig rod for the retreive and fight then too).  360 degree rotation, 90 degree elevation......just load, stand back, aim and fire.........BOOOOM!

I can see one mounted to the bow rail and one on the backrest of the helm seat.

As an added advantage it might be big enough to take a frozen chook, just for when those charter boat bottom bouncers decide to troll their way to a new spot between YOUR boat .....and the headland you are casting at.

....yeah, that would be neat!
