Questions abt SP80M
February 09, 2013, 09:19:25 PM
Compare to Ocean Revolution GT Explorer, which has a stiffer tip? As rated PE6-8, does it lean more towards PE6 or PE8?

Thanks

Really can't help at all with the Ocean Revolution GT Explorer comparison. Not even sure which OR rod that was... was it the long softer tipped one?

I do use SP80M a lot though and it has become one of my favourite Carpenter rods.  I actually bought it intending to use it mostly as a lighter, PE6 rod.  I have however used it mostly with PE8 and it is absolutely fine. Perhaps if PE7 were more widely used, this would be a perfect fit  ;D.  All jokes aside, I would say it leans more towards PE8, and feels great with PE8 and lures like Seafrog 120, Adhek Venus, Cubera 125.  This is a very, very nice rod indeed for those days when you don't need to be fishing big chuggers.

I think the long softer tipped one was called Pathfinder or something like that.

That rings a big bell Brandon.

Also, thinking about it, I think all the GT Ocean Rev rods were called "Ocean Revolution GT Explorer {.............}". If I remember correctly it is the next bit which identifies the rod (i.e Oceanus, Widowmaker, Pathfinder). Widowmaker was a scary, hulking stiff thing!

Is it a total different rod compare to TBL83/32? I thought of getting a TBL83/32 for purely stickbait like the gamma and shell shaping twister and the SP80M for purely chugger like the Hammerhead C Cup, Sea Frog 120g and FCL Labo 120g poppers.

Hi James, I would regard SP80M as a rod specifically for small/medium chuggers. So yes,  good for the type of chuggers you mention.

TBL83/32 is suitable for smallish stickbaits so it depends very much on the size of Gamma and Twisters you intend to use.

Hi James,

The Ocean revolution GT Explorer is a very fine rod. If they are still being made, its not made under that name anymore. Its my goto popping rod, if I decide to chug, I am a 95% stickbait kinda guy nowadays. If you can get hold of one, don't let go. It chugs 125 El Toros (Cuberas) and the Full Scale Kong 180 with ease. Perfectly balanced with a 10K Stella and PE 8.

Have no knowledge of the SP80.

For the TBL 83/32, I should be able to share some experience in the future as mine will be arriving next week and will be fishing it very soon. I plan to cast 120-140 gram stickbaits with it.

Cheers
