PR knot -finishing it off right
April 27, 2008, 07:28:13 PM
Hi all,

I have been practicing the PR knot lately, as it will allow me to fish longer leaders than the twisted ones I make. I'm primarily aiming to use 100lb single leader joined to 80lb braid.

Ive got the whipping part down pat using one of those bobbin things, but the finishing off part Im not too happy with. On a constant straight pull against scales , it will hit the 25-30kg mark of pressure before the braid breaks above the knot (cheap 80lb braid!).
On the leader part I finish with a uni knot and that seems to work , but the half hitches that are down on the braid part of the leader seem to open up or slip a bit. Whats the best way to resolve this, is it a matter of me putting on some gloves and really, really putting pressure on these knots when I tie them up?

cheers
andrew

Andrew, that is quite common. To reduce the incidence of this, pull really tight on the mainline after each couple of half-hitches and then tighten the half hitches while the mainline is under tension. You will find this helps in reducing the slippage when you use it.

Some people also use some glue on the knot. You can buy special PR knot glue for places like Plat.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

Cheers Brandon,

I have another one set up to try out on some scales tomorrow with half hitches alot tighter. Quite a neat knot if I can get some confidence in finishing it off.

Have you tried this other type of glue ? From reading ,its more flexible than ordinary superglue .

Yes I have. It's real good stuff. It's quick drying and quite flexible

I've found with FG,s and midknots (same finish) that it helps to have heaps of tension on the mainline/leader as you do the half hitches ie rod in a rod holder and the leader end secured with a heavy tackle bag on the leader spool. That way you can really lay into the half hitches without the braid mainline warping underneath them, and because everything is a bit more rigid you can get the annoying half hitches tied quite quickly compared to when its all limp in your hands.

I agree absolutely

I wrap the open end of the braid with a forcep plier and a piece of hypolon butt on the braid to reel and pull really hard on the first half hitch. It will cause braid to really bite on the mono before wrapping the rest of the half hitches around the mono.
