Stella 13 SW18000 and aftermarket spools
September 18, 2013, 05:07:02 PM
Has anyone has problems fitting 20000 spools on the new Stella 18000?

Very annoyingly my SOM 20000 is tiny bit too big for the new Stella 18000. When cranking there is a little noise as the base of the spool just touches the base of the rotor.  This did not happen with the 08 Stella 18000.

The 08 standard 20000 spool does not do this and seems to fit the new18000 just fine. Has anyone tried the Yumeya Max 20000 spool with the new 18000?  I was wondering if this problem was with SOM spools only.

Mark, you may be able to add a spacer to lift the spool without it negatively effecting the line lay.. Will depend on the amount of adjustment that the spool will allow? would need to check to confirm...

Maybe it's a sign to stick with the spool that's on the reel to start with!
Putting a som spool on your downgrading!

That's a good idea Clem and I will try one spacer and see if it makes enough difference to create the required clearance. It might as the touching is very minor.  Thanks very much for this pointer.

Just a  follow up on this, one spacer did the trick - thanks Clem!

The same problem exists with the SOM 6000 and new Stella 5000 - the spool just clips the base of the rotor. Again, one spacer stops this.

Makes me a touch nervous about what might happen under load. I think some caution is required with using SOM spools designed for Stella 08s with the Stella 13s.

Howzit Mark,

I tried to put my '08 SOM 18000 spools on the new '13 18000 Stellas but had the same problem. The 16000 som spool fits no prob on the '13 14000 and I have caught fish with it working fine. There was no rubbing at all but I noticed before setting the drag it is kind of wobbly which got me nervous but everything seemed to work great on outings. I purchased a '13 yumeya 20k spool for the 18000 and it looks pretty awesome on the reel, love um.

Re. the 14K with the 16K spool, when you say wobbly, would you say it's not a proper fit? Looking at doing the same but I'm a bit unsure without testing it.
