problems with loose ferrules
Wan Izhan:
A friend of mine had these problems with his newly accquired Carpenter MonsterHunter. :'(
His male joint flying out during heavy casting in Maldives. He said his new MH has loose ferrule (joint) which got space inside the joint section resulting in no grip.
Only the top section is tight. He said the female part also cracked during the incident.
I wonder if this situation has ever happened to Carpenter users?
Do we need to modify the female section i.e. modified to metal ring to prevent break?
Is the epoxy binding for the rod but is not strong enough to prevent the blanks cracks?
Jon Li:
Never seen it in a new rod but a couple of my old favourites have the male ferrules relaminated with a layer of epoxy to get good grip due to extensive uses over the year . The cracked female ferrule is due to loose connection , repairing by winding thread used for guide winding will make the handle usable again but those images in the post , I have never seen a Carpenter rod with aluminium sleeve on ferrule joint , is this a custom work by other rod builder ?
All new Carpenter rods that I have seen , when inserted into the handle , tend to have circa 20mm of the male ferrule outside the handle . Is there any chance your friend has sanded the ferrule in order to get the rod inserted fully into the handle but in the process , making the male ferrule to become loose inside ?

Cheers,

yup2 Pak Jon, the aluminum sleeves was the solution of the cracked female joint, built by another rod builder. I dont think my friend sanded the ferrule since he is very experience GT angler, but i will ask him later.
Interested to know on how you relaminated the male joint using epoxy.
Bwanna, i will ask my friend to send me more pics.
many thanks, cheers

Jon Li:
Hi Izwan ,
The alu sleeve situation is understood , please ask your friend if the loose joint was apparent when he bought the rod , it may just be a swapped handle . I once brought the wrong handle for the my intended rod :-[ resulting I couldn't use my own rods in that particular trip and had to borrow my buddy's rod .
