Hi Adrian,

What other rods do you have?

Cheers,
Tak

Only have CV79/40 which I run PE8. I was just curious if later on I want something to throw smaller lures 40g-100g on PE6.

Hi Adrian,

With models currently available on the market, BLC 80/35R-PM SC is probably only rod that can handle small lures like 40g and also able to fish PE6 line. But your coming trip is not short trip and it will be ideal to bring second rod that is designed for GT fishing and I think good to get something like EP 85/36 as other members suggested above, although lure range are bit different from range you mentioned. This will be good pair to CV 79/40 and covers distance when you need. You will love this rod when you cast your Kattobi   :)

Cheers,
Tak

Hi all
The Carpenter lineup of rods seems like a black box to me
I would appreciate if you can give my basic info about main properties of different rods, off course I did search the specs of each rods, but as you know specs don't tell everything about a rod
My main interest is which rods are for small stickbaits, which are for big stickbaits and which are for chuggers,

Tnanks in advance
Mahmoud

Hi Mahmoud,

What sort of sizes are you thinking for small stickbait? Also line weight and purpose (or target) are you fishing for?

Cheers,
Tak

Dear Tak
I'm looking for a stickbait rod (65-150gm lures) to be used for bluefin tuna over 100kg
I'm also trying to understand the difference between the main characteristics of your lines eg: CV, EP...etc

Thanks

This is not a new model, Peter, the CV79 RF35 has just never been as popular as its big brother.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

ok..thanks brandon...did have few cast with it using 100gm poppers..did feels rod loads up nicely with ample in reserve
did have very good distance..also notice rod is very easy to cast without bitting back as compare to some of the faster blanks...is it becos it has a more progressive blank..?

the CV would profile more comfortably than some of the faster blanks out there.

Hi Mahmoud,

It sounds to me BLC80/35R-PM SC will be good candidate for your purpose.

Also my short description for each series as bellow but can be slightly different depending on actual model as some models can cross over.

BLC - smaller size stickbaits and swim pencils rod for Kingfish, Tuna
CV - lightweight all round GT rods
EP - lightweight versatile rods
LGM- SP - GT Popping rods
MH - heavy GT rod for fishing with high drag tension
TBL - stickbaits and swim pencils for GT, Kingfish, Tuna

Cheers,
Tak

To make a long story short, pun intended, my brand new yet to cast to fish TBL 83/32 had 5 inches of its tip broken off when it was hit by a lure thrown by a buddy (yes we are still friends). He broke it while throwing the lure at an acute angle. My rod was in the corner of the roof rod rack.  :'(

I brought it to a rod builder and he is going to move a guide near the broken end and install a new tip. It was a very clean break, the rest of the blank seem fine.
The rod will then be 7'9" instead of 8'3".

I think I should still be able to use it, perhaps for 100 gram chugger or 140gram stick bait rod.
What do you guys think?
I will only know for sure thru trail and error when I get the rod back, but in the meantime was wondering has anyone had this happen to their Carpenter and how did it work out?

Cheers

I suggest your friend do the right thing and replace the rod and write the rest off to experience.
I have absolutely no idea how this will turn out (not will anyone else as we would simply be guessing) but you will need to be very lucky to have something that is still useable. If you had said an inch, maybe two, I would say the rod would still be useable but five inches is a LOT.

I did have a LB88 that lost 1.5 inches but that rod is long in the first place. Even losing 1.5 inches, it feels very, very different.

Good point Brandon, 5" off is a lot, and would totally change the intended characteristic of the rod.

Fortunately, I was able to find another one from Japan and its coming in today.

I am guessing it'll be too short/stiff to be an effective SB rod, but too soft to work a chugger, even a small one. I will come back on this in a few weeks after I get the rod back and had a few cast with it.
Who knows, it may work out to be a good "long stroke" jigging rod. Otherwise the crew will inherit it as a "bait soaking" bottom basher - albeit a costly one.

Got the rod back 1 week ago, and casted it a few days back.

In a nutshell: bleah!

It cast like a broom stick. Without the tip, it can't load up at all. With a heavier lure the whole rod bends uniformly such that it can only lob heavier baits. Distance lost.

It can't chug anything, not even a 125 El Toro or SS Glans. Without the soft tip surface stickbaits (Gamma 120-160) are unworkable or tedious at best for the bigger SB.

The only thing that'll work, if I don't mind the lack of distance; suspending/sinking stickbaits (Siren's Sorry Charlie 220). But thats too specific and one dimensional to be worth the trouble rigging up for.

Good news? ermh.... I have a spare butt for my other 83/32.
