Gamma 200 rod
July 03, 2011, 04:15:25 PM
I  am new to  all of this but have a question. Are the new Gamma 200s that  seem to  be on every  sales site specifically meant to  be used with  the Carpenter  MH 80 H and the 79xh? was this a designed in tandem or mere coincidence?

No - the Gamma has been around for years. The Monster Hunter series is a new product

there are a number of rods you can use. The size and weight of the Gamma 200 is such that you could get away with most rods provided you know how to work the lure. When the lure first came out, I used a Tokara to literally flop it around (no idea how to work the lure then but it still caught fish!). I thought it was the worst lure ever made by man as I simply could not make it swim properly.

I have of late used a Ripple Ultimo UG79H which handles it beautifully. I have also used a Wild Violence with it. I have used the TBL711 as well although this is pushing the rod.

Provided you know how to work a surface stickbait, you can get away with most rods with this lure although a specialised stickbait rod lke the UG79H is ideal for getting the best out of the lure.

i have a ep88/35 and would say my personal sweet spot for the rod is 120-140g rigged. 200g is way too heavy for this rod.

u might still be able to work the lure, but u wont be casting very nicely.

Please do not forget the weight of the armaments , a pair of #11 splitrings + a pair of #7/0 trebles can easily add 30+ grams to the overall weight of the lure you are casting .

Thanks Brandon, just what I needed to hear. I havn't had a chance to swim them yet but my Wild Violence works Crusty's Sidewinders really well so I had hoped it would be the same for the Gammas.

Cheers, Creffo.

Which begs the question ... how does one work the lure?  (any links or info gratefully recieved)

Re: Gamma 200 rod

I  went out early this morning for a practice with  a gammy 200 with 76 5/0 and my  MH 79 XH.  This was my  trial with  this bigger gamma on my  new rod. It was not as easy as i had hoped to  cast into a 12 to15 knt breeze. Unfortunately it was just  a little rough  and i  could not get  it swimming properly for even half of an entire cast. The second it got on a wave front all was lost.  On lighter Kingie gear an on calm water  i  can get the gammas to  swim most  of the time or until I lose concentration. Personally however they are not nearly  as easy to get them swimming as cherry  pais.  I eventually  went back  to practicing popping with a 180 kong. It cast  very  well into the wind and  didn't seem to mind the chop--- and then the cold NZ rain came and i  beat  it home.

I  got a copy  of the carpenter dvd from a local tackle store for free ( I did buy three caprenter rods!). it was bootlegged but the tackle store said they  had the approval of the carpenter guys. it is all in Japanese --no subtitles. It is a little like watching Lefty Kreh teach fly  casting.. they  all make it look so easy  and smooth but I didn't understand anything they  were saying.. I do have some questions about where the popper stops relative to the white water. From my limit experience  I thought it was always in the white water but they  showed some other techniques or perhaps those were things not to  do or specific advanced techniques  to some of the carpenter lures.

anyways questions for another day and a reason to revisit the tackle store (and Sato who is from japan and introduced me and my  son to squid fishing!!!) . they  are always only  too willing to  answer questions and sell me things.
