Hi Luke,
It was good fun despite the language barrier.  Whilst Liu's written English is coming along, but for a few words he doesnt speak English, either way his English is better than my Mandarin!  Luckily I had an 'interpreter' in JM Singapore agent Simon Ng.  The other guys that came were really just every day recreational anglers rather than hard core jiggers, nice guys too.  I wish a couple of the other JM 'guns' such as Tang had have come.  I watched Liu very closely and, as with all true champions, was very forthcoming in having tackle and technique explained.  I learned a lot.

Hi Andrew,

I have seen that video already, think it was great stuff.

What is your view on the challenge that Liu threw upon the owner of the Malaysia's shop owner?
Would you think it was the difference in rod that made Liu land the fish faster?

Ah Gu,

Wasn't the challenge supposed to be more of a spinnner vs overhead shoot-out?

Maybe... but Liu's statement after his 'triumph' was: JM300 also can land fish, and faster.  ::)

Ah Gu,

The guy with the spinner was also using a JM  ;D

It was JM only production. Quite sure Liu wanted to impress that he could bring a fish in faster with an overhead set-up...wasn't a JM is better than brand "X" comparison for sure.

oh.. pardon my ignorance then...
but..... landing a fish faster with an overhead setup than a spinning outfit, isnt that theorethically the norm given the cranking power of overhead setups?

Another thing that I noted in the video was when they introduced the Progear Oceanus reel, quite a bit of emphasis was on the free-spooling of the reel.... rememeber Liu said something about 'faster to reach the bottom, faster to hook up with a fish'. Now I am not proficient with overhead setups, but does it mean a smoother freespool mechanism will allow the jig to be dropped faster than the normal ones? wouldnt you still have to thumb your spool as you drop? Or is this Progear Oceanus special in the sense that it doesnt require any thumbing at all?  :o
Haven't a chance to see the reel, if it has that speciality of no-thumbs, then I better hurry and go take a look.

Ah Gu,

Regarding your first comment, Liu was using a small overhead set-up compared to the other bloke who was using a saltiga 6000/JM 500 combo. Liu brought his fish up much faster but I don't know what to make of it... honestly, sometimes it's easier and faster with lighter gear if the fish are smaller, don't need to battle or struggle with the weight of heavier outfits....I don't think there's any theoretical advantage as well, depends on angler's technique, fitness, how well his tackle is balanced etc...quite a lot of variables...for your second comment about free spool....well, the speed of the jig drop can definitely be influenced by how good the reel's free spool is but I don't know what to make out of your "thumbs on"/"thumbs off" comment  ???

Anyway it was a JM production so you'd expect to see some form of advertising.

cheers

How do you qualify a small overhead outfit? Just how small is small?  How small can the overhead reel be when they boast a drag of ?? (how many kg?) Its not small at all in my opinion.

I believe the thumb is always used during the drop of the jig to regulate and prevent entanglement of the line... thats the thumbs on i was referring to. Maybe I am wrong, maybe you never had to thumb your spool at the drop, thus not getting the drift. I have not heard of any existing overhead jig reels in the market so far that anglers claimed their jigs dropped too slowly becos the free spooling didnt have enuogh bearings and wasnt smooth enough.

Lastly, I have absolutly no issues with adverts. You have something to sell, you make the best out of it through adverts and thats only right.
But by undermining other products or some other anglers on the trip, thats not the best strategy in my opinion (my very own).
Perhaps thats the reason why I am not a business man ... who knows.. shrugs*

My accurate Boss 665 has a 'cast' control on the opposite side of the drag, my idea was to use it to control jig freefall, which it succeeded in doing. Only problem was when enough pressure was apllied for 300grm+ jigs it applied pressure to the lever drag adjustment knob, which when set at 12kg drag left the knob completely loose in neutral, so that any slight touching of knob would change the drag setting. It was OK up to 8kg of drag [normal type fishing].

Do you do that all the time or was that a 1 time experimental thing? seriously speaking, it doesnt take a lot of effort to thumb control does it? hehe....

You see, we add force to regulate the drop of jigs.. not boost a free spool for fast dropping. To me, to speed up the dropping of jigs, the jig design and weight is the key. Not the smoothness of a free spool.

Someone's obviously taken offense to the JM Perth Video...wonder why ???  :o

I watched the video again. Liu was using a JM 250g/Boss 870 combo while the other bloke was using a Saltiga 6500 exp/JM 500g combo. It's quite clear to me that the Saltiga 6500 exp/JM 500g is the heavier & bigger outfit.

There are also a lot of reports out there about OH reels with poor free spool although these reports are mainly from guys who cast with their reels. However, i'm of the opinion that a smoother free spool will mean faster jig drops into the strike zone although these differences may only be noticed by seasoned jiggers. A lot of the jigging in Taiwan is geared up towards efficiency, time means money to these anglers, the more drops you get on a drift the more fish you're likely to land.

I don't think anyone or any brand was undermined in the JM video. Can't see any evidence for that, it was a JM trip afterall so all parties would necessarily be willing partners.

I'm not JM affiliated btw, just a fan of their rods (not a big fan of their jigs though!), just trying to put things in proper perspective as well.

cheers
