Stella 18000
Ben Rivers:
What is the highest gear ratio you would suggest for a reel for jigging? 4.9?
Mark Harris:
Ideally under 5 I would say.
Rob Langridge:
Ben
The STL18000SW has a gear ratio of 5.7:1 per crank its about 127cm. Very good for popping
The Saltiga 5000 has a gear ratio of 4.4:1 per crank its about 95cm. Very good for jigging
Both are very good reels but in my opinion the Saltiga 5000 is a better reel for jigging than the Stella18000SW.
Where the difference is in the reels for jigging is line retrieve per crank at 127cm the Stella makes it difficult to land big fish as to where the Saltiga line retrieve per crank is 95cm it makes it easier to land big fish.
This is just my opinion Ben.
Cheers Rob
Mark Harris:
It is not only the ability to lift a big fish, it is the ease and rhythm of jigging, especially when you are using heavy jigs. Top water reels like 18000SW and the fast Saltigas will soon either wear you out at their normal retrieve speed, or destroy your rhythm by your having to reel so slowly.
Try to stick to the rough guideline of a gear ratio under 5 for deep jigging and over 5 for top water.
Ben Rivers:
Shimano Saragosa 18000F is 4.9; 20kg Drag - would this be suitable?
