I've had a few e-mails on what we found to be the best poppers for Bugatti this year.
I'd say that for calm water, we found the surface poppers like pencils to be very effective. On the first couple of days when we were concentrating on fishing relatively calm water, the Adhek Long Gobys just killed them. This lure was actually designed as a stickbait but how we fish it is to cast them out and simply retrieve them quickly over the surface. The lure snakes across the surface and seems to really turn the fish on. I have found the Long Goby to the the most effective lure in the blue holes for some three years now. I personally had good success with the Orion Flapper.
After the first couple of days which coincided with deteriorating conditions, poppers came into their own. A lot of fish were landed on the Fullscales, patriot masterd Bombs (150g) and Ebipops. Notwithstanding having proclaimed the virtues of the ebipops previously, I was still a bit surprised by just how effective they were. The prototype Fullscale Long Kongs were also very good. The fact that long poppers proved to be so effective was probably a product of what the fish were feeding on.
George was very proud of one of his prototype Long Kongs but unfortunately, it disappeared down the gullet of something big and he never saw it again!
What didn't work so well on this trip were surface stickbaits and I think the water clarity had quite a bit to do with this. Orion Bigfoots still caught their fair share but the surface stickbaits didn't do so well. I still caught a couple on these but boy, I worked hard for them!
