My little sister has just finished her freshman year of college in New York, and has been living with me here in Kona for her summer break. A few days ago we flew over to Oahu for some shopping and dining. I asked her if she was interested in doing a quick session of GT fishing session, and to my surprise, she seemed into it!
Charlie Cintron thought it would be a cool first to have a girl catch a GT on his boat, and he was nice enough to take us out for a couple of hours early one morning. My sister and I, along with Vinh Ngyuen met up with Charlie at first light and launched the boat in hopes of getting my sister into her first GT.
Vinh set her up with a harness and fighting belt and we gave her a quick tutorial on how to fight a gt should one hook up! Our plan was for us boys to hook up a GT, assess it's size, and then hand it off to her if it seemed like it was 25kg or under. If a giant struck, we would deal with it ourselves instead of throwing her in the fire, haha!
Right off the bat, Vinh hooks into a perfect little guy about 10kg, but it comes off as he was passing the rod to her. A few minutes later i take strike from another small GT and hand the rod to her. She fought this fish for a small bit, but unfortunately it came off also.
After that fish things went dead for a while until the wind picked up and we started to get a faster drift. In about 30m of water Charlie and i took a double strike form a pack of roaming deep water GTs.
I hooked into mine and passed it quickly off to my sister, while Charlie missed one only to have a big boy come up and grab his stickbait within a 2 second window. Again, his big strike ended quickly as the fish bit my 300mm stickbait right between the hooks, dammit!
My sister was hooked up well to hers though, and she handled it like a pro. It gave her a couple good scraps, but after a short fight she had landed her first GT. In my family, it is a requirement that you are able to adequately handle a fishing rod, and she proved herself worthy of it this day!!!
Here are a few pics from her first GT experience, and her first time on the ocean for that matter...
